An apparatus and method for transporting data cartridges between cartridge libraries. A data cartridge is received by a data cartridge transport device, pivoted, and then ejected to a cartridge sleeve of a second cartridge library. In one embodiment, the data cartridge transport device includes a pivot assembly; a cartridge sleeve, mounted to the pivot assembly; a cartridge eject mechanism, operably associated with the cartridge sleeve; a drive assembly; and a clutch assembly. The clutch assembly moves between first and second positions, wherein movement of the clutch assembly to the first position engages the pivot assembly with the drive assembly, thereby enabling pivoting of the cartridge sleeve, and wherein movement of the clutch assembly to the second position engages the cartridge eject mechanism with the drive assembly, thereby enabling ejection of a data cartridge from the cartridge sleeve.

A library apparatus in which a plurality of cartridges can be charged or discharged at the same time, with a simple and compact configuration of a magazine load/unload portion, is disclosed. A plurality of cartridges each containing a storage medium are accommodated in a magazine. The cartridges are moved to a drive unit by a built-in accessor thereby to process the storage media. A charge/discharge mechanism for setting the magazine in the apparatus is configured of an outer door arranged on the front of a frame unit for establishing communication between the exterior and the interior of the apparatus and adapted to be opened/closed manually from outside, an inner door arranged on the back of the frame unit and opened/closed mechanically by the insert/discharge operation of the magazine, and a lock mechanism for the inner and outer doors arranged under the frame unit.

In a library apparatus comprising a recording and reproducing device for cartridge type media and cartridge accommodating racks, a robot hand is configured to comprise a hand mechanism including hooks for holding the cartridge and actuators for perform to and fro movement and opening and closing movement of the hooks, and a mounter for pushing the cartridge when the cartridge is inserted into the recording and reproducing device by the hand mechanism, wherein the to and fro movement and the opening and closing movement of the robot hand and the pushing movement of the mounter is performed by one motor. The cartridge is grasped/released efficiently by the movement of the hooks, the actuators and the mounter.

A system and method for distributing electrical power to an automated robotic device for transporting media cartridges in a data storage library. The system and method include a power distribution strip having a substantially planar insulating member with opposed first and second sides, and first and second oppositely charged electrical conductors on the opposed first and second sides for providing power to the robotic device. The system and method also include multiple contacts on the robotic device for contacting the first and second conductors. The multiple contacts include a first pair of contacts for contacting the first conductor and a second pair of contacts for contacting the second conductor. At least one of the first pair of contacts and at least one of the second pair of contacts maintain contact with the first and second conductors, respectively, as the robotic device moves in the library.

A helical scan transport apparatus for reading and writing data on to a magnetic recording tape which is wound on a supply reel rotatably mounted within a removable tape cartridge is disclosed. The helical transport includes a chassis having a front end portion and a rear end portion. An elevator assembly is mounted on the chassis at the front end. The elevator assembly is configured to receive the tape cartridge and to position the tape cartridge in a loaded position. A take-up reel assembly is coupled to the chassis at the rear end portion. A helical deck is mounted on a central portion of the chassis between the elevator assembly and the take-up reel assembly. The helical deck includes a rotary read/write head, a substantially linear tape loading path between the elevator assembly and the take-up reel assembly, and a movable guide for seizing the tape from the tape loading path and for at least partially wrapping the tape around the rotary head. A linear threading mechanism is configured to grasp the leader block of the tape, thread the tape through the tape loading path of the helical deck, and couple the leader block to the take-up reel assembly. The helical transport has a form factor compatible with the Storage Technology Corporation Model 4400 Automated Cartridge System.

A system for transferring a cartridge comprises at least two opposing bars, each bar adapted to slide in a longitudinal direction between an open position and a closed position; and at least two grippers, each gripper attached to an end of one of the bars and adapted to engage a cartridge when the bars are in the closed position. The bars and the grippers are adapted to move in a transverse direction in order to transfer the cartridge in the transverse direction.

The cartridge stop/compression pad includes a beveled portion and a planar portion that permits the cartridge stop/compression pad to serve a dual function of compression pad and cartridge stop. During retrieval of tape cartridges from a single cartridge interface, the planar portion of the compression pad is oriented such that a tape cartridge is stopped during manual insertion from the single cartridge interface in position for selection and retrieval by the cartridge picker. During retrieval of tape cartridges from all other locations, tape cartridges contact the beveled portion of the cartridge stop/compression pad causing the cartridge stop/compression pad to function as a compression pad and expand vertically upward to permit the cartridge to be fully received into the cavity of the cartridge picker.
