    Abstract: The invention relates to a mass spectrometer having an electron impact ionization source which comprises an ejector for forming a beam of sample gas being driven in a first direction through an interaction region; a magnet assembly configured and arranged such that its magnetic field lines pass through the interaction region substantially parallel to the first direction; an electron emitter assembly for directing electrons toward the interaction region in a second direction being aligned substantially opposite to the first direction, wherein the electrons propagate along and are confined about the magnetic field lines until reaching the interaction region and forming sample gas ions therein; and a mass analyzer located downstream from the interaction region to which the sample gas ions are guided for mass analysis.

    Abstract: The invention discloses a method for monitoring level of paraben comprising: dissolving a sample in a solvent and obtaining a supernatant containing paraben by ultrasonic vibration and high speed centrifugation; performing a derivatization reaction between a derivatization reagent and paraben by adding the derivatization reagent into the supernatant to obtain a derivatization solution containing a tagged paraben; extracting the derivatization solution by an extractant to obtain an extract containing the tagged paraben; and ionizating the tagged paraben by a laser beam and analyzing mass-to-charge ratio of the tagged paraben by an analyzer to determine molecular weight thereof.

    Abstract: A mass spectrometer including an entrance slit, an energy filter, a momentum filter and a detector array, the entrance slit, energy filter and momentum filter being configured to provide molecular analyte ions to the detector array at a mass resolution of about 20,000 or greater. A method for determining the isotopic composition of an analyte in a sample includes converting the analyte to molecular analyte ions, separating the molecular analyte ions using an entrance slit, separating the molecular analyte ions according to their energy levels, separating the molecular analyte ions according to their momenta, detecting two or more of the molecular analyte ions at a mass resolution of about 20,000 or greater to produce molecular analyte ion data; and analyzing the molecular analyte data to determine the isotopic composition of at least a portion of the analyte.

    Abstract: Ion optics devices and related methods of making and using the same are disclosed herein that generally involve forming a plurality of electrode structures on a single substrate. An aspect ratio of the structures relative to a plurality of recesses which separate the structures can be selected so as to substantially prevent ions passing through the finished device from contacting exposed, electrically-insulating portions of the substrate. The substrate material can be a material that is relatively inexpensive and easy to machine into complex shapes with high precision (e.g., a printed circuit board material). In some embodiments, discrete ion optical elements are disclosed which can be formed from a core material to which an electrically-conductive coating is applied, the core material being relatively inexpensive and easy to machine with high precision. The coating can be configured to substantially prevent outgassing from the core under the vacuum conditions typically experienced in a mass spectrometer.
