Abstract: An improved two cycle internal combustion engine, preferably of a stepped piston type, having a unique arcuately shaped transfer deflector valve, which varies by its controlled sliding movement within an inlet passage, the size of exposed opening of an elongated inlet port in the cylinder. The inlet port extends circumferentially part way around the cylinder. The leading end of the valve is preferably angled, in cooperation with the preferably almost tangent orientation of the inlet passage, to induce arcuate movement into each fresh full charge entering the combustion chamber for enhanced fuel charge mixing. In the preferred embodiment, two such valves are symmetrically positioned around the cylinder and arcuately move in unison between closed and open positions over corresponding opposing inlet ports.

Abstract: An injector arrangement is disclosed for injecting a prevaporized fuel-air mixture into the cylinder of an internal combustion piston engine, the injector comprising an auxiliary piston and cylinder arrangement associated with each cylinder of the internal combustion engine and adapted to act as the combustion chamber for the piston and cylinder with which it is associated, as well as to inject a charge of compressed prevaporized fuel into the auxiliary cylinder acting as a combustion chamber. The compressor arrangement includes an auxiliary double acting piston disposed in the auxiliary cylinder, which cylinder is in communication with the main cylinder at its top, the auxiliary double acting piston being reciprocated by a linkage driven by the engine so as to be reciprocated at one-half the cyclical speed of the reciprocation of the main piston and cylinder. The piston moves downwardly to induct a charge of a prevaporized fuel mixture above the piston and then compress the charge upon movement of the piston upwardly, with a slotted port arrangement allowing injection of the compressed prevaporized fuel charged into the space beneath the auxiliary double acting piston upon the piston approaching the topmost extent of travel, which charge mixes with the main air supply compressed into the space beneath the auxiliary double acting piston by reciprocation of the main piston such that combustion takes place in that space. The auxiliary double acting piston acts to expel the residual exhaust gas from the combustion chamber during the exhaust stroke.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine comprises a housing having two cylinders formed therein, a combustion chamber between the two cylinders, and two crankcases. The cylinders are angularly disposed with respect to one another in a V shape with the combustion chamber being located at the apex of the V-shaped configuration. The crankcases are located at the opposite ends of the V-shaped configuration. Pistons are slidably mounted within each of the cylinders for reciprocating movement toward and away from the combustion chambers. The pistons are operatively connected to the crankshafts. One of the cylinders has inlet ports and the other cylinder has exhaust ports and inlet ports therein. During the scavenging portion of the cycle, the exhaust ports and the inlet ports are all opened. The two sets of inlet ports serve to scavenge the previously burned gases from the combustion chamber and also serve to charge the cylinder for the next cycle. Fuel can be admitted through both sets of inlet ports or through either set for gasoline operation. When fuel is admitted only through the inlet ports farthest from the exhaust ports, loss of fuel out the exhaust ports would be substantially reduced during scavenging. Fuel discharge out the exhaust ports would not be prevalent for diesel units.

Abstract: A two-stroke opposed piston engine is provided embodying a single crankshaft which is rotated by the conjoint action of opposed pistons acting through connecting rods and eccentrics on the crankshaft. The crankshaft and its eccentrics are relatively small as compared with those used in conventional internal combustion engines, and are so located in this engine that the forces of compression and the resultant torque are confined within a central area, and the need for a cylinder block of large mass or weight is eliminated. The engine does not require fans or blowers for scavenging the burned gases from the engine. In a modification of the engine, novel means for injecting fuel, a cooling fluid, or a mixture of these into the combustion chamber is employed.
