A data transfer system comprises interconnected network devices organized to constitute a hierarchical logical arrangement having at least three levels of network hierarchy. A network device (102) receives from another network device (101) that is higher at the hierarchy a first data item such as an IP-prefix defining a first set of network addresses such as IP-addresses. The network device composes second data items so that each of the second data items defines one of mutually non-overlapping sub-sets of the first set. The network device transmits the second data items to network devices (104, 105) that are lower at the hierarchy in order to allocate one of the sub-sets to each of these network devices at the lower level of the hierarchy. This procedure can be repeated on all levels of the network hierarchy. Thus, the address configuration can propagate downwards through the hierarchical logical arrangement of the network devices.

If the new node does not detect any leader node in its vicinity, it goes on to the phase (b), wherein, if the new node detects a first cell member node, it assumes the role of leader covering a second cell, obtains an available pool of managed addresses and is allocated one of the obtained addresses.

The preferred method involves segmenting the routable IP address space of a Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) to identify clients requiring differentiated QoS by assigning IP addresses from reserved ranges. The IP addresses are assigned to home clients/the Wi-Fi AP and roaming users based on special DHCP options inserted by the Wi-Fi AP DHCP Proxy software on behalf the Wi-Fi AP and home client devices and roaming devices using the Wi-Fi AP. This creates potentially multiple service classes whereby IP addresses from the reserved ranges are included in traffic classifiers that cause packets to map to service flows which provide for differentiated QoS to the Wi-Fi AP owner, home clients and roaming users on the cable access network.

In general, techniques are described for summarizing label mappings and thereby enabling longest-prefix match within Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks. More specifically, a first router included within a first area of a network comprises a control unit that maintains a label space defining labels available for mapping to a plurality of addresses assigned to network devices within the network. The control unit reserves a contiguous set of the labels of the label space and maps the contiguous set of labels to first area addresses. The first area addresses include those addresses of the plurality of addresses available for assignment to network devices within the first area. The first router also includes an interface card that transmits, to a second router of a second area of the network, an advertisement that advertises a summarized version of the mapping between the contiguous set of labels and the first area addresses.
