A long period fiber grating (LPG) device is formed to exhibit a “turn-around-point” (TAP) in a phase matching curve when the group velocities of two propagating modes are matched. When the grating period of the LPG is selected to coincide with the TAP, a large tuning bandwidth is formed. This device has been found to be highly sensitive to changes in the refractive index of the ambient surrounding the LPG (recognizing a change in refractive index as low as 10−4), allowing the device to be used as a sensor for trace elements in the atmosphere. The ability of the TAP LPG to modify the intensity of a propagating optical signal as a function of changes in the refractive dielectric of a surround material also allows for this device to be used as an all-fiber high speed optical signal modulator.

An evanescent filed based sensor uses a detector for sensing variations in properties of a fluid flowing in a boundary layer adjacent to the detector. The detector comprises an optical waveguide in the form of an optical fiber having a core layer covered by a cladding layer and having a substantially D-shaped cross section defining a planar surface with an optical grating pattern thereon. When a beam of laser light is directed through the detector as an input, variations in an output of the beam of laser light are indicative of changes in fluid pressure or density in the boundary layer or immediate region adjacent to the grating of the optical waveguide.

The specification describes optical mode converters wherein coupling is made between a fundamental, or near fundamental, propagation mode and the next, or closely adjacent, higher order mode (HOM). Both modes propagate in the core of the optical fiber, thus maintaining efficient transmission through the mode converter. Mode coupling is effected using a long period grating (LPG) and the strength of the mode coupling is dynamically varied by changing the period of the grating or by varying the propagation constants of the two modes being coupled. The period of the grating is varied by physically changing the spacing between grating elements, for example by changing the strain on the grating to physically stretch the LPG. The propagation constants of the modes can be varied using any method that changes the refractive index of the fiber containing the LPG, for example, by changing the temperature, or electrically changing the index using the electro-optic effect. In every case the two modes being coupled are core modes with high propagation efficiency.

A long-period fiber grating includes a fiber having a core surrounded by a cladding, and a plurality of refractive index variations periodically spaced along the longitudinal axis of a portion of the core of the fiber. The fiber is twisted throughout at least a portion of its length that includes the plurality of refractive index variations. By twisting the long-period fiber grating, polarization dependent loss is reduced by as much as 30 percent. Also, the peak wavelength of the light propagating through the long-period fiber grating that is coupled into the cladding of the fiber may be adjusted. The peak wavelength may be adjusted in as little as 0.1 nm increments by twisting the long-period fiber grating after the grating has been written and annealed.
