摘要:
An optical filter comprises a first mode converter converting an incident light signal propagating in an incident mode into a signal propagating in a propagation mode LPnm of order higher than that of said incident mode; a second mode converter converting the light signal of higher propagation order LPnm into a signal propagating in the incident propagation mode; and a slanted Bragg grating disposed between said first and second mode converters and adapted to couple the higher propagation order light signal LPnm in back-propagation into said incident mode. The filter is applicable to flattening gain and to multiplexing DWDM signals.

What is described here is a method of or a device for transferring optical signals. An optical conductor including a light-conducting core, which has at lest two parallel interfaces provided with coatings that result in a reflection of the light guided in the light-conducting core, comprises at least one means for coupling the emitter or the receiver, respectively, by diffraction, refraction or diffusion.

Methods to improve the optical properties of Bragg gratings are disclosed. A first method includes a post correction of the refractive index profile by applying an average index correction thereto. The average index correction is obtained through an analysis of the defects of the refractive index profile characterised through a reconstruction thereof. A second method includes a pre-correction to the refractive index profile by characterising the defects of a test grating, and again calculating an average index correction based thereon. Further gratings are then made using a corrected refractive index profile.

An optical grating is disposed on a waveguide to redirect light from the interior of the waveguide through the opposite side of the waveguide from the grating. In one embodiment the waveguide, the grating, and an optical sensor are combined in a single monolithic structure. In another embodiment, an absorbing layer is directly connected to the waveguide in the region of the grating. In still another embodiment, efficiency of the grating is improved by having a high index contrast between the refractive index of the grating and the refractive index of the cladding disposed over the grating, and by having an appropriately sized discontinuity in the grating.

An optical component comprising an optical waveguide and adjacent to it at least one grating array adapted to reflect stray light away from said optical waveguide. The use of a grating array with a plurality of structures like polygons or stripes gives the possibility to define a multiple of reflection directions. This is obtained by using polygons layed out in different orientations up to a random one or a Bragg grating preferably defined with a non-uniform period (chirped). Such grating arrays are usually structured within the same layer as the optical waveguide core layer.

An optical filter having at least one optical fiber component and a thermal compensation device which includes a first, second and third member in which the thermal compensation device has a first and a second fixing point, the first, second and third members are made from materials having first, second and third thermal expansion coefficients, the optical fiber component is attached to the thermal compensation device at the first and the second fixing points thus defining a composite thermal expansion. The optical filter is such that the composite thermal expansion compensates for thermal behavior of the optical fiber component.

A method for fabricating Fiber Bragg Grating elements and planar light circuits made thereof. A mask having a predetermined pattern and a wafer are provided, wherein a light-guiding channel filled with light-guiding substance is formed on the wafer. A photoresist layer is then formed to cover the wafer. Magnification of a photolithography apparatus is adjusted to a first Mag., followed by transferring the pattern on the mask to the photoresist layer to form a first pattern. Light-guiding substance not covered by the photoresist layer is then removed so that the first pattern is transferred to the light-guiding channel. The light-guiding channel then forms a Fiber Bragg Grating element.

A method for producing aperiodic gratings and waveguides with aperiodic gratings uses a simulated annealing process that starts with a random configuration of grating elements and iteratively computes a spectral response from a Fourier transform of the configuration of grating elements obtained in successive iterations. A cost function is computed as a convergence criterion. The aperiodic grating can be used, for example, as a filter in WDM applications.

In a temperature control device which maintains an object to be controlled at a preset constant temperature and an arrayed waveguide grating optical wavelength multiplexer/demultiplexer, the adverse effect of the junction temperature of the semiconductor control element is eliminated for the purpose of simplifying the overall structure and improving operation efficiency sufficiently without any trouble. The object 10 to be controlled, which is an arrayed waveguide grating optical wavelength multiplexing/demultiplexing element, is fixed on the soaking plate 2 which is made from a good heat conductive material. The semiconductor control element 3 with a control terminal which functions as a heat generator by using its-junction temperature and a temperature sensor 5 are fixed on the soaking plate 2. A negative feedback control is applied to the conduction condition of the semiconductor control element 3 in accordance with the error signal s3 which indicates the difference between the present temperature signal s2 obtained from the temperature detection signal s4 transmitted from the temperature sensor 5 and the preset target temperature signal s1. Consequently, the junction temperature of the semiconductor control element 3 is effectively used as a heating source not as a loss, thereby reducing the power consumption and stabilizing the performance.

Wide range linear tuning of optical gratings is possible by selecting a thin film heater such that the temperature variation in heater's resistivity null matches the temperature variation in the heat transfer coefficient of air h. A tunable optical device, such as a fiber grating with such a grating heater, exhibits near linear tuning characteristics over a wide range of temperatures and tuning currents. The heater is useable in other heat tunable optical devices such as interferometers.
