The present invention aims to provide a surface-conductive resin suitable for wiring boards, and the like, a process for forming the resin efficiently, and a wiring board using the surface-conductive resin. The surface-conductive resin according to the present invention is formed by selectively generating reactive groups capable of substitution under alkaline conditions on the resin surface, bringing the reactive groups into contact with an alkaline solution so that part of the reactive groups are substituted by alkali metal ions, bringing the substituted parts by the alkali metal ions into contact with ions of a conductive material so that the alkali metal ions are substituted by ions of the conductive material, and reducing the ions of the conductive material so that the conductive material deposits on the resin surface.

The present invention is directed to a process for hydrogenating one or more organic compounds especially unsaturated organic compounds by bringing the compound into contact with a hydrogen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst, which comprises one or more catalytically active metals applied to a porous catalyst support. The one or more catalytically active metals having been derived via a decomposed organic complex of the metal on the support, in particular amine complexes of the metal. The decomposed complex may be treated with hydrogen to activate the catalyst before use as a hydrogenation catalyst.

The present invention provides a process for the hydrogenation of a polymer under supercritical conditions. A reaction mixture of hydrogen, at least one polymer, at least one hydrogenation catalyst, and appropriate solvent(s) for the at least one polymer and catalyst is provided and is pressurized and heated to meet or exceed a determined critical pressure and determined critical temperature for the reaction mixture. The hydrogenation occurs under these supercritical conditions, thereby overcoming the hydrogen solubility and mass transfer problems typically encountered in hydrogenation methods at subcritical conditions, wherein hydrogen must be pressurized into solvent to reach the polymer.

Lactam polymers has been modified with sodium borohydride (NaBH4) to yield lactam polymers bearing hydroxyl functional groups. These functional groups are useful for the covalent attachment of reactive groups, fluorescent probes, antimicrobial agents, bioactive factors, and drugs. The resulting as components for medical devices, specifically ophthalmic devices and more specifically contact lenses. Hydrogels based on these polymers are also useful for biomedical applications in the areas of drug delivery, tissue engineering, and implantable devices.

The present invention relates to a process for producing a petroleum resin which comprises subjecting a cyclopentadiene based compound and a vinyl-substituted aromatic compound substantially free from a high molecular weight substance to copolymerization reaction in the presence of a solvent. According to the present invention, it is made possible thereby to obtain a petroleum resin and a hydrogenated petroleum resin which are each minimized in the amounts of high molecular weight substances and which have each narrow molecular weight distribution.

A nano-particle composition including a poly (alkenylbenzene) core and a poly (conjugated diene) or a poly(alkylene) surface layer is provided. The nano-particles have a mean average diameter less than about 100 nm. The nano-particles can be modified via, for example, hydrogenation or functionalization. The nano-particles can advantageously be incorporated into rubbers, elastomers, and thermoplastics.
