Abstract:
An apparatus and method for removably attaching one or more optical fibers so as to be in alignment with a respective electro-optic component on a circuit board within an enclosure. In a first embodiment, the header attaches to an aperture of an enclosure, thereby protecting the circuit board from dust and liquids. In a second embodiment, the header and protective enclosure are one integral unit. The invention enables one or more optical fibers to be detachably attached to a first side of a header or header/enclosure, and for a circuit board having one or more electro-optic components precisely positioned thereon to be attached to the other side thereof and accessed by the attached fiber by a through-hole in the header. A ferrule surrounds at least one optical fiber near an end thereof and includes a seating surface which seats on the exterior side of the header or header/enclosure. When two optical fibers having free ends of different length are carried by the connector, ferrules attached to each connector enable the optical fiber ends to be accurately positioned at different heights above respective electro-optic components on the circuit board.
Abstract:
A seed blockage monitoring system employs a flexible, generally flat piezoelectric seed sensor element inserted at an acute angle of about 13 degrees into a seed flow path so that a portion of seeds traveling in the seed flow path strike the seed sensor element, preventing damage to the seeds and maintaining forward momentum of all seeds in the seed flow path. In order to provide flexibility in monitoring seeds of different types and to increase the data rate that information can be obtained from numerous multiple seed sensor elements, the use of a one-shot to temporarily store a seed detection signal and serial sampling of the temporarily stored signals from the sensors as in the prior art is avoided. Instead, a comparator that includes a diode in a feedback loop so as to function as a latch is used in conjunction with a serial shift register that has parallel data input lines. This enables the microprocessor to monitor outputs from one or more sensor elements, or a digital representation thereof, at a higher rate than attainable in the prior art seed blockage monitors. As a result of the increased rate at which information can be obtained from the seed sensor elements, the microprocessor can not only provide seed blockage data but can also provide relative flow data for the various monitored seed flow paths and compute an overall seeding rate.
Abstract:
A microprocessor-based electronic control system for a powershift transmission having at least one proportional actuator, such as a solenoid-operated proportional valve, is disclosed. The controller operates a plurality of on-off solenoid valves and the solenoid-operated proportional valve to provide operator-selected gear shifts in both forward and reverse directions having controlled clutch engagements achieved by modulation of clutch engagement pressure by the proportional valve. The key parameters associated with the gradual clutch engagement are all easily varied by the controller, most under program control during operation, to provide for optimized clutch engagements for smooth gearshifts. The key parameters include: fast-fill clutch delay, initial clutch engagement pressure, rate of increase of clutch engagement pressure, and the length of the reduced pressure clutch engagement interval. The electronic controller also automatically modifies selected parameters in accordance with sensed changes in temperature, magnetic flux coupling between solenoids, and variations in the voltage supply provided to the series combination of the solenoid coil of proportional valve and its solenoid driver circuit. Preferred methods of operating the electronic controller and powershift transmission are also disclosed.

Method for automated hydro-blast de-coking of delayed coke drums wherein programmed central control receives input of drill stem tension, drill bit elevation and drill stem rotation along with indications as to hydraulic hoist power and air pressure input to the drill stem rotary motor, and functions to provide control outputs to automatically control the pilot and main bed cutting procedures attendant an entire drum de-coking operation.
Abstract:
An alarm system for bicycles and the like in which a collar having an undulating exterior surface is mounted on the handlebar post and rotates therewith. A moveable trigger member, preferably a spring biased pin, is mounted to the bicycle chassis adjacent the collar. Unauthorized rotation of the handlebars causes the collar to rotate against the trigger member, moving that member to close a set of contacts and thereby complete an electrical alarm circuit. The alarm circuit is controlled by a latching relay which hold the alarm on until either an automatic timing device operates to terminate the alarm, or the system is turned off by a key-operated lock. The trigger member closes another set of contacts to actuate the alarm if the bicycle is tampered with by removing the collar.
Abstract:
An improved double-acting, nonexpansion, noncondensing, piston steam engine. A coiled tube flash boiler enclosed in an insulated fire chamber is located above and contiguous with the cylinder head of the steam engine. The base of the fire chamber has a cylindrical opening to enable the heat from the flames in the fire chamber to be transferred directly to the top cylinder head for enhanced heat transfer to the cylinder. Two parallel crank shafts, each having a spur gear fixed thereon which meshes with the spur gear fixed on the other, are mounted on pillow block support bearings. A "T" linkage interconnects the crank shafts and the piston of the steam engine. Two rotary valves are provided to control the flow of high temperature steam and spent steam to and from the cylinder.
