Abstract:
An online system receives advertisement (“ad”) requests for presentation to online system users. An ad request may include an identifier of a landing page identifying a source external to the online system from which content is retrieved and presented to a user who interacts with content from the ad request. The online system determines a quality score for the source based on a frequency with which online system users request content from the source via the online system and various types of interactions by online system users with content associated with the source that is presented by the online system (e.g., interactions with content associated with the source indicating user interest in the source). Based on the quality score for the source, the online system modifies a score for the ad request used by the online system to determine whether to present content form the ad request to a user.
Abstract:
An online system analyzes videos from video hosting systems to identify embedded contents in the videos. The online system associates embedded content with videos that include the embedded content. The online system determines statistics describing distribution of the embedded content by the video hosting system, for example, the rate at which the embedded content is included in videos and demographics of the users targeted for the embedded content. The online system may use the information describing distribution of the embedded content by other video hosting systems to modify the distribution of embedded content by the online system.
Abstract:
Systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable media can provide a first interface for presenting a content feed that includes at least one content item, the content item being associated with a link that references external content. A determination is made that the content item was accessed. Data corresponding to the external content is obtained. Data corresponding to the content item is obtained. A second interface that includes a first region and a second region is provided, wherein the content item is displayed in the first region, and wherein the external content is displayed in the second region.
Abstract:
An online system presents advertisements and content items to its users in a feed of content items (e.g., a newsfeed). The online system enforces one or more advertising policies regulating insertion of advertisements into the feed. For example, an advertising policy specifies a minimum distance between advertisements in the feed. Based on a likelihood of the user interacting with an advertisement, the online system may modify one or more of the advertising policies to increase a likelihood of the advertisement being included in the feed. For example, an advertising policy is modified if the user has at least a threshold likelihood of interacting with the advertisement. To modify an advertising policy, the online system may ignore the advertising policy when selecting content for the feed or may modify conditions limiting inclusion of advertisements in the feed specified by the advertising policy.
Abstract:
Competitive bidding tools, including a competitive bidding scaler tool and a competitive report generator, may be implemented by an advertiser to improve their advertisement's performance in online advertising auctions. The competitive bidding scaler tool increases the bid amount associated with an advertiser's ad request when a competing advertiser submits a rival ad request to the same online advertising auction. The competitive report tool generates a competitive report for an ad request that benchmarks its performance against rival ad requests. The competitive report comprises a summary of wins and losses experienced by the ad request in an online advertising auction as well as an option to implement the competitive bidding scaler tool for the ad request.
Abstract:
An online system selects advertisements for inclusion in a scrollable advertisement unit that includes a display area and multiple advertisements, each associated with a position in the scrollable advertisement unit. Positions in the scrollable advertisement unit are ranked based on a measure of predicted performance of an advertisement in each position. Advertisements are ranked based on a probability of being viewed by a user if associated with a particular position in the scrollable advertisement unit and, optionally, on a probability of presenting an advertisement based on characteristics of the advertisement. The position ranking and the advertisement ranking are used to associate advertisements with positions. For example, an advertisement is associated with a position having a location in the position ranking corresponding to the advertisement's position in the advertisement ranking.
Abstract:
An online system presents a scrollable advertisement unit including multiple advertisements to a user. The scrollable advertisement unit presents one or more advertisements in a display area, and allows a user to navigate through the advertisements in the scrollable advertisement unit to display different advertisements in the display area. One or more rules for crediting an impression to an advertisement in the display area are applied, and a tracking mechanism associated with the advertisement in the display area is loaded if at least one rule is specified. Loading the tracking mechanism identifies an impression of its associated advertisement.

Abstract:
An online system provides content based on context of host content. The online system allows content providers to define specific context for providing their content for display to users, including specifying categories, format, popularity, and visual appearance of host content eligible for hosting their content. To determine which content a specific content item is eligible for hosting, the online system categories host content items according to specific criteria defined by different content providers for hosting various content. Each content is indexed by classification groups into which the host content items are classified. If a particular content item includes an opportunity for presenting content, the online system identifies content which the particular content item is eligible for hosting. The online system selects one or more identified content for presentation via the opportunity.
