    Abstract: In a thin film magnetic head comprising a magnetoresistive sensing element (MRE) located inwardly from the head face, a first section of a broken flux guide extending inwardly from the head face to overlie one peripheral edge portion of the MRE, and a second section overlying an opposite peripheral edge portion of the MRE, the space overlying the MRE between the flux guide sections is filled with a poller such as a photoresist, providing a smooth surface for a test/bias conductor, reducing shorts due to inadequate step coverage, and providing mechanical stress relief, leading to improved stability of the MRE.

    Abstract: A process for fabricating a negative pressure slider is disclosed which briefly comprises the steps of: (a) applying a dry negative photoresist layer to the surface of the slider; (b) positioning a mask having alignment marks which are too narrow to be resolved during exposure and development to pattern the photoresist layer to expose the portions of the flying surface of the slider to be milled by an ion milling process; (c) ion milling the slider wherein the patterned photoresist layer protects the flying surface of the slider while the negative pressure cavities of the slider are being milled; and (d) removing the remaining portions of the photoresist layer once the negative pressure cavities have been milled.

    Abstract: A magnetic head is manufactured by depositing a layer of spacer material onto the facing surfaces of the magnetic cores; the thickness of each layer being approximately one-half the length of the intended gap and the thicknesses of both layers together being approximately equal to the thickness (length) of the gap. A layer of bonding glass is deposited onto the surfaces of the spacer layers and the cores are pressed together at an elevated temperature to fuse the glass layers and extrude most of the glass.
