A gas cell array absorbs infrared energy radiated by a viewed scene. A la interferometer has its resultant intensity changed by the cell's changing length. This is monitored by a vidicon tube that feeds the signal to a digitizer and onto a video display. The incident infrared radiation is chopped into quantized amounts of energy and memory units receive the digitized output of the vidicon tube. Subtractors receive vidicon tube signals simultaneously with quiescent reference levels data. The subtractors form a difference signal by subtracting the quiescent reference level signal from the immediate signal being passed to control threshold detectors. An extended dynamic range of 1,000:1 is accomplished for the preferred embodiment.

A hand-held radiometer for non-contact temperature measurement of objects is provided with a probe which is adapted to be mounted on the optical barrel of the radiometer to permit the radiometer to which it is attached to provide contact temperature measurements. The probe comprises a thin plastic film of low thermal mass which is shaped on one end thereof to be easily deformed when brought into contact with a specimen whose temperature is desired to be measured. The inner surface of the plastic film has a high emissivity, and a retainer means is provided on the other end of the thin plastic film for mounting the probe on the optical barrel of the radiometer.

The disclosure illustrates a fluidic infrared sensor comprising a thermally conductive, laminar flow element exposed to infrared energy and series connected with a control jet of a proportional fluidic amplifier. The laminar flow element is heated, thereby varying the flow of the control jet and the deflection of the amplifier''s power stream to produce a pressure output proportional to the level of infrared energy. In order to maximize the amplifier output due to very low levels of infrared energy, the laminar flow element is positioned in a thermal insulating chamber having a reflective inner surface. An opening in line with the focus point of a reflective parabolic mirror permits concentrated infrared energy to be applied to the fluidic device positioned in line with the opening. An alternate laminar flow element for this application senses the direction from which the infrared source originates.

A temperature sensor comprises a single-mode all-fiber Michelson interferometer. The interferometer includes a bi-directional coupler and signal and reference fibers having mirrored ends. These two fibers are of unequal lengths to provide an optical path length in-balance and the signal fiber may have a metal temperature sensing probe at its mirrored end. The injection current of a laser light source for the interferometer is modulated with a ramping signal so that a linearly moving interference pattern is produced at the output by mixing of the reflected beams propagated in the signal and reference fibers. The interference pattern is monitored by a photodetector and electronic circuitry processes the output of the photodetector to determine the optical phase shift between the light beams propagated in the signal and reference fibers, which phase shift is dependent on expansion or contraction of the signal fiber with respect to the reference fiber and is therefore related to the temperature at the sensing probe.
