The products are sensitized by a dispersed solid high explosive and/or gas bubbles or voids. Preferred primers are sensitized by PETN and are rigid. The products are made by crosslinking a liquid polymer in the continuous phase of an emulsion which contains the aqueous solution as a discontinuous phase.

The invention provides a booster assembly for a main explosive wherein the booster charge is formed from TNT and PETN and/or RDX and contains less RDX and/or PETN than required in comparably performing conventional booster charges of the cyclotol and pentolite types. The booster charge is a layer of a cast explosive of the group of pentolites, cyclotols and mixtures thereof, and a layer of cast TNT contiguous thereto. On a weight ratio basis, preferred pentolites contain PETN/TNT of from 60/40 to 40/60; and preferred cyclotols contain RDX/TNT of from 75/25 to 50/50, including Composition B which is a 60/40 RDX/TNT containing 1 percent of a microcrystalline wax.

Generally, embodiments of the invention can include a linear shaped charge (LSC) end cap coupling structure adapted for holding an initiator structure adapted to initiate a booster explosive material, the booster explosive material, and the LSC in abutting contact with each other. One embodiment includes a rubber body formed with cavities adapted to receive the LSC, booster, and initiator structure (e.g., detonation cord). One internal cavity can be formed with a plurality of flexible protrusions or fins which are oriented towards a center axis of the preferred embodiment of three cavities configured to impart an interference fit with the initiator structure. A continuous extrusion process for manufacturing composite gun propellant is disclosed. The disclosed process is particularly suitable for preparing gun propellant formulations based upon a cellulose ester binder. In the process, the binder ingredients are dissolved in an organic solvent and then pumped directly into a twin-screw extruder. The other ingredients, except the oxidizer, may optionally be dissolved in the organic solvent prior to introduction into the twin-screw extruder. The oxidizer is dried, ground, and also fed dry to the twin-screw extruder. In the extruder, the materials are thoroughly mixed and the solvent is reduced to sufficient level for direct extrusion through the desired dies.

An explosive booster which contains a secondary high explosive material of such density that it is capable of receiving a detonation from one secondary high explosive mass, across a discontinuity, and of then detonating and transmitting the detonation to another secondary high explosive mass. The explosive booster is produced by compacting the secondary high explosive material to a density such that the booster is capable of acting as both an acceptor and donor of a detonation. The explosive booster may be used to transfer a detonation from one secondary high explosive mass to another such mass as for example in detonating a string of perforating guns within wellbores in the oil and gas industry.
