    Abstract: A prosthesis or orthosis comprising a c system comprising: a first member (100); a second member (200) pivotally coupled to the first member around a first axis; a passive elastic element (210) fixed to the second member and acting on the rotation around the first axis; a torque controlling mechanism (300) mounted between the first member and the passive elastic element. The torque controlling mechanism is configured for controlling a torque around the first axis in three modes of operations: a first mode wherein load is not transmitted between the first member and the passive elastic element in both working directions of the passive clastic element; a second mode wherein load is transmitted between the first member and the passive elastic element in one working direction and not transmitted in the other; a third mode wherein load is transmitted between the first member and the passive elastic element in both working directions.

    Abstract: A prosthetic ankle includes a pair of prosthetic members coupled together to allow movement of the pair of prosthetic members with respect to one another. A hydraulic actuator or damper including hydraulic fluid in a hydraulic chamber is coupled to one of the pair of prosthetic members. A hydraulic piston is movably disposed in the hydraulic chamber and coupled to another of the pair of prosthetic members. A hydraulic flow channel is fluidly coupled between opposite sides of the chamber to allow hydraulic fluid to move between the opposite sides of the chamber as the hydraulic piston moves therein. A voice coil valve is coupled to the hydraulic flow channel to vary resistance to flow of hydraulic fluid through the flow channel, and thus movement of the piston in the chamber, thereby influencing a rate of movement of the pair of prosthetic members with respect to one another.

    Abstract: The inventive subject matter provides apparatus, systems and methods in which an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) utilizes a rotary jaw coupling that prevents excessive plantarflexion and dorsiflexion of the foot, while still allowing such movements with little or no counterforce over a limited range. The jaw coupling comprises at least a first digit which is freely or almost freely rotatable between first and second stops in the range of 30° to 60° of arc, and more preferably between 30° to 40° of arc. Extreme motion of the digit(s) is limited by one or more stops. Different ranges of motion can be provided by replaceable spiders. Resilient materials can be used to provide desired characteristics of resiliency, compressibility, damping, and/or amounts of play.

    Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for configuring a human-machine interface according to a user's relative preference, or weighting, of a set of utility factors, such that a user can customize a human-machine interface in the absence of the direct selection of interface parameters. In some example embodiments, a total utility function (associated with overall utility of a human-machine interface) is calculated based on the sum of a set of weighted utility functions, with each utility function being weighted according to a respective user-tunable weight, and with each user-tunable weight prescribing a relative importance of a respective utility factor to the total utility function. A set of parameters of the human-machine interface that optimize the overall utility function for a selected set of user-tunable weights is determined and employed to configure the human-machine interface.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for controlling an orthopedic joint of a lower extremity in at least one degree of freedom by an adjustable actuator for adjusting an orthopedic apparatus to walking situations that differ from walking on a plane. The orthopedic apparatus includes a top connector connected to a limb and an orthopedic element that is arranged in a hinged manner distal to the top connector. The method encompasses the following steps: —several parameters (A) of the orthopedic apparatus are sensed by sensors; —the sensed parameters are compared with criteria (K) that have been established based on several parameters and/or parameter curves and are stored in a computer unit; —a criterion is selected that is suitable on the basis of the determined parameters and/or parameter curves; and —resistances to movements, extents of movements, driving forces, and/or the progresses thereof are adjusted in accordance with the selected criterion in order to control special functions (5) that differ from walking on a plane.
