Abstract: A method of replacing blades of an end effector of a surgical tool includes moving the end effector distally from an assembled state, where the end effector is rotatably mounted to a clevis, to an extended state, where an axle is dislodged from open-ended slots defined in opposing arms of the clevis. The end effector includes opposing first and second blades mounted to first and second blade holders rotatably mounted to the axle. The blade holders are separable from the blades in opposing lateral directions, and a new blade set comprising new blades and a new axle are then mountable to the holders, and the end effector is moved proximally and back to the assembled state by receiving the new axle within the open-ended slots.

Abstract: A forceps having a first jaw and a second jaw, where at least one of the first and second jaws is capable of moving between an open position and a closed position. The forceps including an inner shaft located within an outer shaft and extending along the longitudinal axis, and a drive bar coupled to and extending distally from the inner shaft. The drive bar including a pair of drive bar struts extending from a distal portion of the inner shaft and positioned laterally inward of at least one of first and second set of flanges of the first and second jaws. A drive pin is securable to the pair of drive bar struts and the drive bar is translatable within the outer shaft to translate the drive pin to move the first jaw and/or the second jaw between open and closed positions.

Abstract: In various embodiments, a tissue thickness compensator can comprise a compressible extracellular matrix and a bioabsorbable material dispersed within the extracellular matrix, wherein the bioapsorption of the bioabsorbable material is configured to leave behind channels in the extracellular matrix. The tissue thickness compensator can also comprise generation means for generating the ingrowth of tissue into the channels. In at least one embodiment, the tissue thickness compensator can comprise dissolvable wicking members which, when dissolved, can leave behind channels in the tissue thickness compensator. In certain embodiments, the tissue thickness compensator can comprise at least one rupturable capsule.

Abstract: An actuation mechanism for actuating an electromechanical end effector includes a housing, and a shaft assembly extending distally from the housing. The shaft assembly includes a shaft, a longitudinal knife bar, a first hub, and a second hub. The shaft is axially movable relative to the housing and configured to be coupled to the electromechanical end effector. Rotation of a first screw of the housing moves the first hub to effect longitudinal movement of the shaft. The longitudinal knife bar is axially movable relative to the shaft and configured to be coupled to a knife blade of the electromechanical end effector. Rotation of a second screw of the housing moves the second hub to effect axial movement of the longitudinal knife bar.

Abstract: An end effector assembly includes a clevis having first and second spaced-apart arms, a ceiling, a floor, pivot and cam pins extending between the arms, and first and second jaw members. Each jaw member includes a proximal portion and a distal body extending distally from the clevis. The proximal portion of the first jaw member includes a first flag disposed between the first and second arms of the clevis, operably coupled to both the pivot pin and the cam pin, extending vertically at least partially through openings defined within the ceiling and floor. The proximal portion of the second jaw member includes second and third flags disposed between the first and second arms of the clevis in spaced-apart relative to one another and between the ceiling and the floor. The second and third flags are fixedly engaged to the clevis.

Abstract: A surgical instrument includes a housing including an actuator disposed thereon and an elongated shaft extending therefrom. The elongated shaft includes an end effector assembly including a pair of opposing jaw members including a knife channel defined therein. An articulation section is disposed between the housing and the end effector assembly and is configured to articulate the end effector assembly upon actuation of the actuator, the articulating section and a proximal end of the knife channel defining a first distance therebetween. A knife assembly includes a knife having a length, the proximal end including an engagement feature disposed thereon. A knife drive rod is configured to engage the engagement feature to secure the knife drive rod to the knife such that the distal end of the knife extends beyond the engagement feature and wherein the knife length is less than the length of the first distance.
