Abstract: A projection system includes a projection lens to project image light along an image light path towards a port window and to redirect a portion of the image light away from the image light path as result of being scattered or reflected away from the image light path. The projection system includes a port window for transmitting projected image light from the projection lens. The port window has a surface for redirecting a portion of the projected image light as result of being scattered or reflected away from the image light path. The projection system includes an enclosure positioned between the port window and the projection lens to surround the image light path between the port window and the projection lens. The enclosure absorbs the portion of the image light redirected by the projection lens and absorbs the portion of the projected image light redirected by the surface.

Abstract: An imaging apparatus for conveying a virtual image including a waveguide having first and second surfaces. An in-coupling diffractive optic and an out-coupling diffractive optic arranged along one of the first and second surfaces, wherein the in-coupling diffractive optic is operable to direct image-bearing light beams into the waveguide for propagation by total internal reflection, and wherein the out-coupling diffractive optic is operable to direct at least a portion of the image-bearing light beams from the waveguide through the second surface toward an eyebox. An at least partially transparent outer cover located adjacent to the first surface, and a circular polarizer arranged between the waveguide and the outer cover, wherein the circular polarizer is operable to circularly polarize at least a portion of image-bearing light beams transmitted through the first surface and to prevent at least a portion of image-bearing light beams transmitted through the first surface from reentering the waveguide as a result of reflection from the outer cover.

Abstract: The present disclosure related generally to techniques for improving the performance and efficiency of display systems, such as laser scan beam display systems or other types of display systems (e.g., micro-displays). Display systems of the present disclosure may include a polarization compensation optic, such as a spatially varying polarizer, that provides phase retardation that varies as a function of position, which provides polarization compensation to provide light that is well suited for a polarization sensitive optic of the display system, such as a waveguide-based optical system, a pancake optical system, a birdbath optical system, a coating-based optical system, etc. The display systems of the present disclosure may be components of head-mounted display systems, or other types of display systems.

Abstract: A wearable device comprises a left view optical stack for a viewer to view left view cinema display images rendered on a cinema display and a right view optical stack for the viewer to view right view cinema display images rendered on the cinema display. The left view cinema display images and the right view cinema display images form stereoscopic cinema images. The wearable device further comprises a left view imager that renders left view device display images, to the viewer, on a device display, and a right view imager that renders right view device display images, to the viewer, on the device display. The left view device display images and the right view device display images form stereoscopic device images complementary to the stereoscopic cinema images.

Abstract: A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a process that includes obtaining three-dimensional image content having first and second images. The first and second images include first and second numbers of pixels. The first and second images are arranged according to a shared coordinate system to portray different perspectives of a common scene. A first portion of pixels are removed from the first image based on a filtering of the first image, resulting in a first remaining number of pixels. A second portion of pixels are removed from the second image based on positions of the first portion of pixels in the shared coordinate system, resulting in a second remaining number of pixels. The first remaining portion of pixels is combined with the second remaining portion of pixels to form a transport frame for delivery to a media processor. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Abstract: A projection display system having a projector, the projector includes a laser light source, a lighting system, and a control circuit. The laser light source has a first laser light source module and a second laser light source module. The first and second laser light source modules provide laser light. The lighting system converts the laser light into image light for displaying an image. The image light includes first polarized light and second polarized light. The control circuit controls the laser light source and the lighting system. The control circuit independently controls the light energy output by the first and second laser light source modules to change the intensity of the first and second polarized light.
