摘要:
A compact single frequency, single-mode 1 μm fiber laser with narrow linewidth ( 2 mW) is formed with an oxide-based multi-component glass fiber doped with triply ionized rare-earth ytterbium ions and fiber gratings formed in sections of passive silica fiber and fused thereto. The multi-component glass supports higher doping concentrations than standard silica fiber, hence higher output power levels in short cavities. Formation of the gratings in passive silica fiber both facilitates splicing to other optical components and reduces noise thus improving linewidth.
摘要:
A method and apparatus for stabilizing the output of a mode-locked laser by monitoring the temporal behavior of the pulse train profile and controlling the laser cavity optical length and/or loss modulation frequency accordingly. A mismatch of the cavity optical length and the loss modulation frequency will yield a first characteristic noise condition on the laser beam pulse train when the optical length is too short for a given loss modulation frequency and a second, different noise condition when the optical length is too long. The laser beam is monitored and analyzed to determine which noise condition is present. The cavity optical length is adjusted accordingly by movement of one or more optical elements or by changing the index of refraction of one or more optical elements. In the alternative, or additionally, the loss modulation frequency can be adjusted to bring the laser back into mode lock.

A self-mode-locked ring cavity laser incorporating a laser crystal such as Ti:Sapphire includes an external cavity for producing self-starting of mode-locked operation. The external cavity receives a portion of one of the continuous wave beams from the ring cavity modulates it, and retroreflects it back to the ring cavity to initiate mode-locked unidirectional operation. The unidirectional mode-locked operation is in a direction which decouples the external cavity.

The invention pertains to wavelength-agile optical filters suitable for wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) optical communications networks. More particularly, the invention pertains to optical filters with a wavelength reference that can be remotely switched to arbitrarily selectable channels on a standard grid, and to re-configurable optical communications networks employing same. The present invention provides a communication apparatus with a tunable filter which may be used in a wide range of applications including tuning an external cavity laser (ECL), selecting a wavelength for an add/drop multiplexer and providing channel selection and feedback for a wavelength locker. The filter may be utilized as a discrete component or in combination with circulators, wavelength lockers and gain medium. The filter may be implemented in whole or in part as part of a gain medium. The tunable filter exhibits a compact form factor and precise tuning to any selected wavelength of a predetermined set of wavelengths comprising a wavelength grid. The tunable filter may thus be utilized in telecom applications to generate the center wavelengths for any channel on the ITU or other optical grid.

A laser uses a rare-earth doped phosphate laser glass characterized by a particularly high rare-earth content to generate the highest possible output power/energy pulses. The laser glass is composed primarily of P2O5, Al2O3, and alkaline earth and alkali earth oxides, and possesses other properties such as physical and thermal properties that are compatible with melting and manufacturing methods. The laser glass can be used in high power and high energy laser systems where laser action is achieved in rod or slab shaped components as well as in waveguide or thin film structures prepared by structuring technologies such as sputtering, ion exchange, and/or direct writing with a femtosecond laser.

A method for compensating for wavelength drift in a fiber-optic laser transmitter includes 1) controlling a temperature within the optoelectronic assembly at a defined level; 2) driving the optoelectronic assembly to emit light, wherein the emitted light has a wavelength that is within a channel of operation, the channel of operation including a range of wavelengths centered around a channel center wavelength; 3) accessing from memory within the optoelectronic assembly a control value associated with the temperature of the optoelectronic assembly at defined points within an operational lifetime of the optoelectronic assembly; and 4) recalculating the defined level by reference to the control value, whereby a wavelength of the optoelectronic assembly is maintained within the channel of operation despite an expected drift of wavelength.

Apparatus and methods that utilize tunable elements to provide for selective wavelength tuning of a light beam. The apparatus comprises a first tunable wavelength selection element having a first adjustable free spectral range, a second tunable wavelength selection element having a second adjustable free spectral range, with the first and second tunable wavelength selection elements configured to define a tunable joint transmission peak. The first and second tunable wavelength selection elements respectively define first and second pluralities of tunable transmission peaks, wherein respective ones of each of the first and second plurality of transmission peaks are aligned to obtain a joint transmission peak that may be adjusted by tuning the wavelength selection elements. The free spectral ranges of the wavelength selection elements are configured to enable a Vernier tuning effect.
