摘要: A subdermal lighting apparatus with enhanced operational longevity, safety and biological compatibility with a user is provided. The subdermal lighting apparatus includes a housing unit to store a radioactive isotope, a phosphor layer affixed to an interior surface of the housing unit to interact with radiation emitted by the radioactive isotope to generate visible light, a radiation shielding layer disposed around the housing unit and able to permit the generated visible light to pass through, and a biologically safe layer disposed around the radiation shielding layer able to permit the generated visible light to pass through. The biologically safe layer serves as a barrier between the radiation shielding layer and biological tissue of the user, thereby enhancing user safety of the apparatus.

摘要: An apparatus for and method of performing multi-photon light sheet microscopy (MP-LISH), combining multi-photon excited fluorescence with the orthogonal illumination of light sheet microscopy are provided. With live imaging of whole Drosophila and zebrafish embryos, the high performance of MP-LISH compared to current state-of-the-art imaging techniques in maintaining good signal and high spatial resolution deep inside biological tissues (two times deeper than one-photon light sheet microscopy), in acquisition speed (more than one order of magnitude faster than conventional two-photon laser scanning microscopy), and in low phototoxicity are demonstrated. The inherent multi-modality of this new imaging technique is also demonstrated second harmonic generation light sheet microscopy to detect collagen in mouse tail tissue. Together, these properties create the potential for a wide range of applications for MP-LISH in 4D imaging of live biological systems.

摘要: There is provided a system and method for providing and utilizing objects having invisible three-dimensional images. There is provided an object comprising an inner material and an outer material. The inner material is formed in a three-dimensional shape and includes a first portion having a first ratio based on a first fluorescent dye and a first transparent material, wherein the first ratio is selected such as to cause the first portion to remain transparent when exposed to a visible light and the first portion to emit a first visible color when exposed to an invisible light. The outer material comprises a second transparent material formed around the inner material such as to hide the three-dimensional shape of the inner material. By exposing the object to the invisible light, the three-dimensional shape of the inner material is revealed.

摘要: Various aspects of the present invention are directed to apparatuses and methods for up-converting electromagnetic radiation. In one aspect of the present invention, a plasmonic up-converter apparatus includes an excitation source operable to emit electromagnetic radiation at an excitation frequency and at least one array of nanofeatures. The at least one array of nanofeatures is configured to produce an emission spectrum responsive to irradiation by the electromagnetic radiation. The emission spectrum has an intensity at a second harmonic frequency or a third harmonic frequency approximately equal to an intensity at a fundamental harmonic frequency, with the fundamental harmonic frequency being approximately equal to the excitation frequency. Additional aspects are directed to a display that utilizes any of the disclosed plasmonic up-converter apparatuses, a laser in which a laser medium is optically pumped using electromagnetic radiation produced by one of the disclosed plasmonic up-converter apparatuses, and methods of up-converting electromagnetic radiation.

摘要: A method for detecting traces of material on a surface for forensic evidence gathering is disclosed. The surface is periodically illuminated with laser radiation. Pairs of images of the surface are recorded with one image in each pair recorded while the surface is illuminated and the other being recorded while the surface is not being illuminated. The images in each pair are subtracted and a video signal is generated from the subtracted images. The video signal can be displayed on a display device or recorded for later display and examination.
