A servo system and method for initializing and calibrating a track following servo for following an index servo position displaced laterally from an edge, the edge comprising the interface between two dissimilar servo signals. A servo head is moveable laterally and a servo detector determines a ratio related to the two dissimilar recorded servo signals, the ratio representing the lateral position of the servo head with respect to the edge. An independent position sensor determines the mechanical lateral position of the servo head. The servo head is nominally aligned at a lateral position at which the servo detector provides a ratio representing the edge. The mechanical lateral position of the independent position sensor is measured at the nominal alignment of the servo head. Then, the servo head is repositioned laterally the predetermined displacement distance from the nominal alignment as determined by the independent position sensor. The repositioned ratio of the servo signals is measured at the displaced distance, comprising index ratio for initializing and calibrating the track following servo.

A device and a method are disclosed for obtaining a corrected servo control signal in a servo control loop take in account a dynamic behavior of the servo control signal to calculate a new threshold for this signal. If the servo control signal for any reason goes beyond the extremum then it is corrected by replacing it with the value of the threshold. Depending on the difference between the servo control signal and the threshold the new threshold may be greater or smaller than the previous threshold value. The threshold may be a maximum or a minimum thus limiting the servo control in its maximum or in its minimum value.

Servo track positioning information is asynchronously digitally sampled from adjoining servo tracks having different servo patterns, and varies between a maximum envelope and a minimum envelope of positioning information. An envelope follower receives the digital samples, detecting and providing a maximum envelope output measuring the amplitude of a burst envelope of the maximum digital samples, and detecting and providing a minimum envelope output measuring the amplitude of a burst envelope of the minimum digital samples. A “DROPOUT” threshold detector detects the received digital samples failing to meet a “DROPOUT” threshold related to the maximum burst envelope. An “ACQUIRE” detector responds to the “DROPOUT” threshold detection, detecting the minimum envelope for the envelope detector, which provides the minimum envelope output. The “DROPOUT” detection distinguishes the minimum envelope from the maximum envelope and allows measurement of the minimum envelope. A ratio of the measured maximum envelope amplitude and measured minimum envelope amplitude represents the lateral position of the servo head.

An optical tracking system is presented which aligns a recording head with a magnetic tape. The system relies on an optically detectable servo track on the back of the tape. The servo track is formed by repeatedly engraving, at spaced intervals, three colinear marks perpendicular to the length of the tape. Laser light reflects off the marks, and passes through a ball lens that directs the reflected light on to separate light detectors, one for each mark. By recording characteristics of the reflected light, the detectors transmit information to the system that permits the recording head to be properly aligned with the tape.

A novel tracking control device and method is disclosed. In the tracking control device and method, digital information is reproduced from a recording medium by a reproducing head, an error contained in the reproduced digital information is detected, and the relative position between the recording medium and the reproducing head is controlled by using the detection result. In addition, an arrangement capable of realizing a high tracking capability with respect to the non-linearity of a track is also disclosed. The arrangement forms a plurality of tracking error signals indicative of positional deviations between the reproducing head and a plurality of divided areas into which each track formed on the recording medium is divided, and selectively uses the plurality of tracking error signals.

The invention provides a method, apparatus and software for detecting mechanical faults in tape drives. The invention is especially suited to detecting collisions against a read/write head in a tape drive that occurs during tape threading operation. According to embodiments of the invention the read/write head is located at a predetermined position with a predetermined effective holding force, and an independent position sensor that senses the position of the read/write head is used to detect collisions against the read/write head. According to embodiment of the invention the relative frequency with which mechanical faults are detected over the course of multiple tape threading operations is evaluated to determine if there is a mechanical fault in a particular tape drive.

A lateral tape sensor for a tape drive having a tape head that is not capable of moving vertically as quickly as tape media, wherein the sensor senses lateral movement of tape media as it moves along a tape path between a storage reel and a take-up reel. The lateral tape motion sensor comprising a means for sensing the position of at least one edge of the tape media and a means for comparing the at least one edge position to predetermined thresholds to determine if the tape media moved laterally. When the lateral movement exceeds predetermined thresholds, the tape drive processor and control circuits respond to prevent accidentally overwriting data previously written on an adjacent track during a write operation, to adjust the tape head to locate data being read following lateral tape motion that occurs during a read operation or to warn the user of poor tape media quality.

A tape movement constraint is provided for a tape drive system which moves a tape longitudinally along a tape path across a tape head, the tape having longitudinal tracks. The tape head has a track following servo system for moving the head laterally for following lateral movement of the tracks, where the tape is subject to lateral transient movement. A tape roller bearing closely adjacent the tape head is rotatable about a central axis parallel to the cylindrical peripheral surface, allowing the tape freedom of movement in the longitudinal direction. The tape roller bearing has a frictional cylindrical peripheral surface for contacting and engaging the surface of the tape and constraining movement of the tape in the lateral direction, thereby reducing the rate of the lateral transient movement of the tape to allow the track following servo system to follow the reduced rate lateral transient movement of the longitudinal tracks. Any potential air bearing that could form between the surface of the tape and the surface of the roller bearing is collapsed to insure that the roller bearing frictionally contacts and engages the surface of the tape.
