Abstract: In some embodiments, optical fiber monitoring may be facilitated. In some embodiments, monitoring of an optical fiber may be performed via a detection system to detect changes in the optical fiber that are indicative of one or more events. During the monitoring, a monitor signal may be transmitted along the optical fiber via a light source, where the monitor signal is received by the detection system as light from the optical fiber. While the detection system continues to receive light from the optical fiber in connection with the transmitting of the monitor signal, a test disturbance event may be caused to occur at a predetermined location along the optical fiber via a device at the predetermined location. In response to a failure of the detection system to detect test-related changes in the optical fiber caused by the test disturbance event, a notification indicating an issue may be generated.

Abstract: A clip is provided. The clip includes first and second shells shaped to mate around a band. An inward facing surface of the first shell has a lateral groove shaped to accommodate the fiber optic filament of the band and at least one protrusion. When the first and second shells are mated around the band the at least one protrusion passes through one of the holes in the band and engages a matching groove in an inward facing surface of the second shell. The first and second shells have a shape such that, when the first shell and the second shell mate around the band and lock into the connector, the first shell and the second shell collectively block any exterior light from reaching the light detection circuitry of the connector along the path of the band other than light through the fiber optic filament.

Abstract: An integrated communication and smoke detection system includes a fiber harness having at least one fiber optic cable for transmitting light, the at least one fiber optic cable defining a node arranged to measure one or more conditions at a predetermined area. A light source is operably connected to the fiber harness to transmit light along the at least one fiber optic cable to the node. A control system operably coupled to the fiber harness such that scattered light associated with the node is transmitted to the control system, wherein the control system analyzes the scattered light to determine at least one of a presence and magnitude of the one or more conditions at the node. The control system is configured to allow multiple inputs and outputs for communication of information through the fiber harness and node using modulated light.

Abstract: Described herein are methods and systems of distributed acoustic sensing, such as in an urban or metropolitan area involving a dedicated and established fibre optic communications network including a data centre. In general, the disclosed method and system includes the steps of (a) selecting an optical fibre cable installation having a path extending across a selected geographical area, the optical fibre cable installation including a bundle of optical fibres and forming part of a fibre-optic communications network, (b) determining characteristics associated with the optical fibre and/or the selected optical fibre installation, (c) transmitting outgoing light in the optical fibre, (d) receiving reflected light back scattered along the optical fibre, and (e) based on the reflected light and the determined characteristics, generating an alert signal representative of an acoustic event. The disclosed method and system are thereby configured to detect acoustic events near or within the selected geographical area.

Abstract: A method is provided for detecting intrusion into an optical cable of a single mode optical fiber network comprising where monitoring light signals are transmitted along a telecommunications optical fiber to be monitored either along a fiber additional to a data fiber or by multiplexing onto a common fiber. The received monitoring light signals after transmission along the telecommunications optical fiber are analyzed for changes indicative of movement of the optical fiber for detecting an intrusion event. The monitoring light signals at the receive end of the fiber signals are monitored by feeding the signals from the single mode fiber into a multi-mode fiber in a manner which causes changes in modal power distribution which can be detected by taking a portion only of the modes.

Abstract: A distributed optical fiber disturbance positioning system based on the asymmetric dual Mach-Zehnder interference, unlike traditional dual Mach-Zehnder distributed optical fiber disturbance sensing system, the present invention adopts two narrow-bandwidth optical sources (1a, 1b) and adopts corresponding DWDM (3a, 3b) before the detector (4a, 4b) to filter the backscatter noise of the optical fiber, and can solve the problems of having too low SNR due to backscatter influence when the sensing distance is long. The present invention also provides a positioning method for applying the system, which obtains the TFD of the disturbance frame signals by using the time-frequency analysis method based on the short-term average frequency, and takes the points near the point of maximum frequency as the effective signal segment for performing cross-correlation time delay estimation, thus obtaining the delay, and the disturbance position. The method of the invention positions the asymmetric disturbance frame signals in the systems, thus having a high positioning accuracy and reliability.
