Abstract:
A method and an apparatus are provided for measuring the thickness of a coating material using ultrasonic signals. A broad band of frequencies is transmitted by a transducer towards a layer of coating layer on a substrate and a trailing signal is received from the coating layer/substrate interface while a leading backscattered signal from a fluid/coating layer is gated out. The trailing signal is deconvolved into a set of frequencies. The resonant frequency of the coating layer is determined as the frequency with the greatest amplitude. The thickness of the material is calculated as a function of the resonant frequency of the coating layer.

A shock tube comprises a driver section, an expansion section connected to the driver section, and an extension connected to the expansion section. Shock absorbent material is disposed within a cavity defined by the driver section and extension section. At least one active vent is disposed over respective holes in the extension section that are connected to the cavity. The extension section is adjustable between one of at least two positions such that a length of the extension section in a first position is longer than a length of the extension section in a second position. The length of the gas column contained within the driver section can also be adjusted by the position of a movable bulkhead.

A mobile testing environment is adapted for detecting drive line system imbalances in an automotive vehicle and includes an enclosed trailer for providing insulation from ambient weather, temperature and noise. The trailer also has a hitch for attachment to a towing vehicle for transport. An angular position and speed sensor is adapted to generate a signal responsive to speed and angular position of a drive shaft. Vibration sensors are adapted to detect drive line vibration and generate a signal responsive thereto. A signal analyzer is adapted to receive signals generated by the angular position and speed sensor and the vibration sensors to calculate any imbalance in the drive line system and present counterbalance weight and position parameters for correcting any system imbalance. The angular sensor comprises a pair of perceptron cameras adapted to send a pair of signals to the signal analyzer.

An apparatus 10 for measuring and/or analyzing the rollover characteristics of a vehicle 12. Apparatus 10 includes a controller 14, a selectively movable test fixture assembly 16, a truck or towing vehicle 18 which is coupled to trailer assembly 16 and which selectively tows or drives assembly 16, several cameras 22, 24, 26 and 28, and a user interface 30. Vehicle 12 is attached to test fixture 16, and user interface 30 is used to activate motor assembly 36 which selectively rotates vehicle 12 to a desired roll angle 90 relative to the ground surface 43. Once vehicle 12 is correctly positioned, an operator drives truck 18 at a predetermined and desired speed. Controller 14 generates release signals to exploding bolts 86, 88, which simultaneously explode, thereby releasing vehicle 12 from frame 32. In this manner, apparatus 10 allows the drop height and the translational and vertical velocity of a vehicle to be selectively controlled, adjusted and repeated from test to test, and provides controllable and predictable roof-to-ground impacts.
Abstract:
An apparatus for detecting and processing impacts to an electronic percussion instrument is disclosed. The apparatus includes a pad for being impacted with an impact pressure at an impact point, and several sensors. One sensor is located in close proximity to the pad for producing a first output value corresponding to the impact pressure, and another sensor located in close proximity to the pad for producing a second output value corresponding to the impact point and the impact pressure. A processor determines a computed impact point from the first and second output values, and controls output sound in conformance with the computed impact point.
Abstract:
A surrogate component for shock testing is disclosed that includes a housing with exterior dimensions, mass, and a center of gravity approximately the same as the exterior dimensions, mass, and center of gravity of a counterpart component. The housing also has a stiffness greater than the counterpart component and has an interface for securing a sensor. In particular, the counterpart component may be hard drive and the housing may be constructed from a molybdenum material.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for the accurate monitoring of a granule during compression testing is provided and enables the study of breakage mechanisms that cause particle failure during compression. The method involves compressing a granule or particle with the apparatus and the apparatus is a spring device that combines a spring in parallel with the granule or particle and a spring in series with the granule or particle. Under failure conditions, sudden deformation of the granule or particle results in fast relaxation of the granule or particle during breakage and allows very careful granule breakage. Measuring or recording devices coupled to the apparatus provide for the detailed study of breakage conditions at the moment of failure and lend incite into the compression strength characteristics of the granule or particle.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for side impacting testing of motor vehicles at a sub-system level. By advancing a side impact barrier into the vehicle shell mounted on the fixture at a predetermined speed, full-scale crashworthiness for side impact collisions can be predicted, thereby significantly reducing development cost and time. The fixture includes a base for supporting the vehicle shell, a side portion for reinforcing a lateral side of the vehicle shell and protecting against deformation and a roll-over prevention structure. The fixture additionally includes a plurality of casters attached to the base.

A portable data collector and analyzer apparatus and method provides predictive and preventative maintenance of a multiplicity of assets through the use of a unique architecture that allows a variety of different application programs to be downloaded to the apparatus for providing a single multi-purpose portable data collector and analyzer apparatus that can employ the variety of different application programs for configuring, inter alia, different measurements types, different transducers types and different signal processing types for collecting and analyzing sensed physical data from a variety of different assets found in industrial plants. A unique frequency shifting and decimation method is employed for spectrum calculation that, inter alia, retains DSP addressing efficiency and increases signal processing speed. Additionally, a unique synchronous sampling method is employed that generates synchronous sample waveforms from asynchronous sample waveforms. Furthermore, a unique clear touch screen overlying a quarter VGA display, an ergonomically designed keypad, and an intuitive user interface allow quick and easy setup and operation for in-field data acquisition, analysis and display.
Abstract:
A damage detection device is used to detect damage in bonded and laminated composite structures. A tap hammer or tap coin containing an acceleration sensor is connected to a circuit that can measure the width of an impact signal and then display the result. The result correlates to local stiffness of a structure. A method of determining the desired signal width and the method of using the damage detection device, includes tapping a known good region and then tapping a suspect region. Readings from the two areas are used to determine whether the suspect region is within an acceptable range. The circuit determines the desired signal width by measuring from the time the impact signal exceeds a threshold to the time it falls below the threshold.
