    摘要： A spotting projectile, especially for training purposes, which dispenses a cloud of powder upwardly on impact to indicate its location visibly. The projectile has an interior cylinder receiving a piston in gas-sealing slidable relation, so that gas trapped in the cylinder is compressed by forward inertial movement of the piston when the projectile impacts. The compressed gas ejects a powder charge carried by the piston rearwardly from the projectile to form a visible cloud.

    摘要： A tail fin assembly for a guided projectile which is capable of withstanding the high pressures experienced during launch, which is also capable of stabilizing the projectile during initial flight shortly after emergence from the cannon or large gun barrel and which is also capable of freely spinning relative to the projectile front section for the remainder of the flight to minimize projectile roll to accomplish all of these capabilities sequentially during a single launch. The assembly includes the projectile and a rotatable member, preferably a tail fin assembly with tail fins which is rotatable about the projectile major axis and which is normally locked against rotation about the projectile. A locking structure is provided for locking the rotatable member against the rotation which is responsive to a predetermined condition to permit rotation of the rotatable member about the projectile. The tail fins are normally retracted and secured to the rotatable member and are extendable in response to a predetermined condition.

    摘要： A projectile adapted to be fired at supersonic velocity from a gun barrel includes a tubular body of substantially circular cross-section having a leading inlet end and a trailing exit end and a central passageway extending therethrough. The leading end of the body is of a shape such that the internal diameter of the central passageway decreases from the leading inlet end to a throat region. The ratio of the cross-sectional area of the passageway in the throat region (A.sub.t) to the cross-sectional area of the passageway at the leading inlet end (A.sub.i) is sufficiently large and is so related to the projectile velocity at launch as to enable a normal shock wave to pass through the throat region to establish supersonic flow in the passageway and thus provide a relatively low aerodynamic drag after launching. The ratio A.sub.t /A.sub.i also has a value less than 1.0 so that as the velocity of the projectile decreases to a predetermined flight Mach number, which is a function of the A.sub.t /A.sub.i ratio, the shock wave is expelled from the passageway to establish choked flow conditions in said passageway and relatively high aerodynamic drag whereby to limit the range of the projectile.
