Abstract: A damper including a shaft member 2 having wings 4a, 4b which are formed on the outer periphery of a shaft 3, a cylindrical casing 1 relative-rotatably incorporating the shaft member, and oil chambers A to D which are provided between the outer periphery of the shaft member and the inner periphery of the casing. Protrusions are provided on the inner periphery of the casing so as to be slidable on the outer periphery of the shaft. Communicating paths 5a, 5b pass through the shaft to enable communication between a pair of adjacent oil chambers. At least one of openings of the communicating path is closed by the protrusion 8a, 8b of the casing within a relative-rotating range of the shaft member 2.

Abstract: A retarder system for commercial vehicles is provided which consists of a transmission oil circuit (18) for lubrication of the transmission and of a retarder cooling circuit (4) which uses oil as operating fluid, both circuits being coupled via a connection (21) so that in the non-activated braking state of the retarder (1), for increasing the transmission oil flow rate through a radiator (3), oil can be branched off from the transmission oil circuit (18). In addition a retarder pump (12) is proposed which has a prime mover (25), preferably an electrical motor.

Abstract: The housing of a shock absorber is constructed to include an inner chamber surrounded by an outer chamber. The inner chamber is divided by the piston to which the piston rod is connected into two portions. One of these portion has a number of orifices that fluidly connect that portion to the outer chamber. A piston slidably and movably fitted along the length of the outer chamber divides the outer chamber into two compartments, one of which is in fluid communication with the portion of the inner chamber to which it is connected by means of the orifices. An incompressible fluid is provided in the fluidly interconnected compartment and portion. A biasing force acts against the piston in the outer chamber by means of a pressurized gas provided in the other compartment of the outer chamber. With the shock absorber thus constructed, when the piston rod moves, the piston to which it is connected would force an exchange of fluid between the inner chamber and the outer chamber, which acts as a reservoir. Both the size of the orifices and the pressure of the gas that acts against the piston in the outer chamber contribute to defining the stiffness of the shock absorber, i.e., how much dampening is to be effected to the movement of the piston rod relative to the housing. Another embodiment of the shock absorber partitions the outer chamber into three compartments, with the two end compartments being in fluid communication with the inner chamber. An alternative embodiment of the shock absorber is constructed with coacting pairs of plunger/bore and plunger/cavity for enhancing the damping effect of the shock absorber.

Abstract: A free run clutch apparatus is disclosed for damping movement of a device mechanically connected to the apparatus. The apparatus includes a housing which defines an enclosure and a rotor rotatably located within the enclosure, the rotor defining a cavity. A shaft has a first and a second end, the first end of the shaft being rotatably disposed within the cavity. A biasing device is disposed within the cavity between the first end of the shaft and the rotor. Also, a black oxide coating is coated on the biasing device such that when the shaft is rotated in a first direction, a free run of the biasing device within the cavity is permitted. However, when the shaft rotates in a second direction opposite to the first direction, the coated biasing device grabs the rotor so that damping of the rotation of the shaft in the second direction can be achieved.

Abstract: A rotary damper includes a housing having an annular groove with an inlet portion, and a rotor having a main annular portion to be inserted into the annular groove and a cap portion attached at one side of the main annular portion. The main annular portion is inserted into the annular groove to form a space therein so that the cap portion closes the annular groove. A plurality of sealing members is situated on inner and outer sides of the main annular portion for sealing the space, and a viscous fluid is filled in the space. An engaging shoulder portion is provided on one of the housing and rotor, and an engaging portion is provided on the other of the housing and rotor for engaging said engaging shoulder portion.

Abstract: A rotary damper for use in motor vehicle suspensions comprising a rotor disposed within damping fluid in a fluid chamber of a case to form fluid volumes, with valves for flow control and an accumulator for fluid fill variation and thermal expansion mounted internal to the rotor. A first check valve and first control valve mounted in a first flow passage within the rotor allow flow from second fluid volume to first fluid volume, but restrict flow from the first fluid volume to the second fluid volume. Similarly, a second check valve and a second control valve mounted in a second flow passage within the rotor allow flow from the first fluid volume to the second fluid volume, but restrict flow from the second fluid volume to the first fluid volume. Thus, the valves are configured to provide independent control of damping for each direction of rotation.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to a rotary drag device having relatively rotatable members one (4) of which has a stack (5) of closely spaced, thin-walled flexible annular plates (20) peripherally mounted thereon to provide annular running faces and a viscous fluid filling the spaces between the plates, and the other (6) of which members has a stack (8) of segmental plates (33) having part-annular running faces interleaved with the annular plates to slide between the plates with relative rotation of the members.
