Incorporated into the conveyor are fluted rollers and beater rollers which cooperate to agitate the bottom portion of the modules and work the fibers on the bottom of each module so as to stretch and relax these fibers, thereby causing the sand, dirt, mud, trash and other debris accumulated along the bottom of the modules to be released. A conveyor feeds this debris to a hopper.

The housing carries a descending series of pronged feeder rollers near one end which release fibers from the adjacent end of the module and throw same onto a transversely traveling conveyor for ultimate delivery, for instance, to the gin equipment. A rotary sweeper returns escaped fibers to the feeder rollers and a novel jacking system provides for adjusting the vertical positioning and levelling of the housing. A door at the forward end of the housing moves against the rear end of the module when the fibrous remnant is too thin to be self-supporting.

A conveyor feeds this debris to a hopper. Further, after the cotton modules have been dispersed into clumps of cotton by disperser drums in a feeder head and the clumps deposited in a clump chamber, a trough having a sieve means receives the clumps of cotton. In the trough, a conveyor disposed in the trough urges the clumps of cotton in a lateral direction toward an air separator box adjacent the feeder head. The movement of the cotton in the trough allows sand, dirt and other debris released from the clumps of cotton to pass through the sieve means in the trough. The clumps of cotton removed from the feeder head are introduced into an air separator box where additional contaminants are removed from the dispersed cotton prior to delivery to a cotton gin.

A bale opener arranged for travel along a series of fiber bales for removing fiber tufts from top surfaces thereof. The bale opener includes a toothed opening roll supported in an orientation transverse to a direction of travel and a grate formed of grate bars spaced in a direction transverse to the direction of travel and arranged for engaging the top surfaces of the fiber bales. The teeth of the opening roll extend between the grate bars for penetrating into the fiber bales during travel. There are further provided bale pressing elements supported by the bale opener on opposite sides of the opening roll spaced therefrom parallel to the direction of travel. The bale pressing elements are arranged to engage and press down the fiber bales during travel of the bale opener. A setting arrangement simultaneously vertically adjusts the bale pressing elements in opposite directions.
