The invention relates to regulatory sequences that regulate gene expression in the mesocarp and/or senescent leaves of certain plants. In certain embodiments, the invention is directed to abundant and selective expression of type 3 metallothionein-like genes in the mesocarp of a variety of plants including members of the Palme family. The invention also relates to methods of generating transgenic plants and plant tissues that comprise a nucleic acid of the invention. The invention further provides products derived from transgenic plants, plant materials or plant cells of the invention. Particular applications in oil palms are discussed. The invention further relates to nucleic acid constructs of the invention in cells of organisms other than plants.

The objects of the present invention are to provide a fat composition which even in long-term storage at low temperature (in a refrigeration or freezing range), has excellent cold resistance because the fat is inhibited from undergoing crystal growth, and to provide a process for producing the composition. The present inventors made intensive studies in order to accomplish the object and, as a result, they have found that a cold-resistant fat composition comprising 0.15 to 4.5% by weight of tri-saturated fatty acid glycerides based on a fat which is in a liquid state at room temperature and has 60% or more of the proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids in all the unsaturated fatty acids therein, a process for producing the same, and an oil-based food comprising as a main component of its fat component(s) the cold-resistant fat composition can be provided.

The present invention relates to stabilizing marine oil by treatment with silica in the presence or absence of carbon and vacuum steam deodorization at a temperature between about 140null C. and about 210null C. in the presence of 0.1-0.4% deodorized rosemary or sage extract. If desired 0.01-0.03% ascorbyl palmitate and 0.05-0.2% mixed tocopherol can be added. A method of using such oil in food applications is provided. A method of identifying the sensory quality of unknown marine oils is also provided.

A canola line has been stabilized to produce seeds having an null-linolenic acid content of less than that of generic canola oil, more preferably less than or equal to about 7% null-linolenic acid relative to total fatty acid content of said seed and a total glucosinolate content of less than 18 nullmol/g of defatted meal, more preferably less than or equal to about 15 nullmol/g of defatted meal. This canola line has reduced sulfur content of less than or equal to 3.0 ppm, improved sensory characteristics and increased oxidative stability.
