    Abstract: Selective hydrogenation processes are disclosed that can upgrade impure feeds, such as those obtained from biomass and containing a number of small (e.g., 2-6 carbon atom) molecules having aldehyde and/or ketone carbon atoms. For example, whereas glycolaldehyde and its methylated derivative, hydroxyacetone (acetol) are both high value intermediates for certain downstream processing reactions, they are normally recovered in a condensate from pyrolysis of carbohydrates (e.g., aldose-containing sugars) together with glyoxal and its methylated derivative, pyruvaldehyde. The selective hydrogenation of these compounds bearing two carbonyl carbon atoms, without over-hydrogenation to ethylene glycol and propylene glycol, can increase the concentration of the desired intermediates. These beneficial effects of selective hydrogenation may be achieved through the use of a hydrogenation catalyst comprising noble metals such as Ru and Pt.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a purified dialkyl furan dicarboxylate (DAFD) vapor composition containing at least 99.5 wt. % DAFD; 5-(alkoxycarbonyl) furan-2-carboxylic acid (ACFC) that, if present, is present in an amount of not more than 1000 ppm, alkyl-5-formylfuran-2-carboxylate (AFFC) that, if present, is present in an amount of not more than 1000 ppm, 5-(dialkoxymethyl)furan-2-carboxylic acid (DAFCA) that if present, is present in an amount of not more than 1000 ppm, and alkyl 5-(dialkoxymethyl)furan-2-carboxylate (ADAFC) that if present, is present in an amount of not more than 1000 ppm, in each case based on the weight of the DAFD vapor composition.

    Abstract: A method is provided of preparing a compound of formula II: where: R1 and R2 are independently selected from —CH2OR′, —CHO, —COOR′ and —H, provided that R1 and R2 are not both —H; and R′ is selected from —H and C1-6 hydrocarbyl groups, from a compound of formula I: the compounds of formulas I and II being optionally in the form of a salt. The method comprises dehydrating the compound of formula I at: a pH in the range of from 0 to 6 or 8 to 11.5; and a temperature in the range of from 10 to 80° C. The method is particularly useful for synthesizing substituted furans from compounds derived from sugars.
