The production configuration defines a production of a plurality of production sequences for a plurality of delivery routes, wherein each delivery route is assigned one or more production sequences, each of which define a production of a plurality of production collections of a collection type comprising a plurality of products. For each feeder an occupancy with products, which are to be conveyed by the feeder to the conveyor for preparation for the product collections, is determined. A production optimization parameter determines whether a defined production order is to be maintained for the delivery routes or whether the production order of the delivery routes can be altered. If the production order can be altered, the production sequences of a plurality of delivery routes for the production of production collections of the same collection type are combined to a cohesive production sequence and the occupancy of the feeders is determined for the production order with combined production sequences.

The printed product is trimmed in the cutting region of the cutting unit which is arranged between a transfer station and a delivery station. In the cutting region, each clamp transitions from a circular control path section into an intermediate control path section in which the clamp is maintained substantially perpendicular relative to a tangent to a circular cutting path of the cutting unit during trimming of at least the top and bottom edges of the printed product.

The apparatus for forming an imbricated product formation, in which the pitch between successive printed products can be deliberately selected, comprises successively arranged first and second conveyors. A scanning device detects the printed products arriving on the first conveyor at a first imbrication pitch, and delivers for each printed product a signal to a measuring unit. This measuring unit determines a time dependent value, such as the repetition frequency of the signals produced by the scanning device and delivers such to an evaluation circuit. In the evaluation circuit the thus determined time dependent value is combined with a signal proportional to the deliberately selected pitch between the products and which deliberately selected pitch is different from the first imbrication pitch, and the resultant signal value is delivered to a motor regulator. This motor regulator compares this resultant signal value with a signal generated by a tachogenerator coupled to a drive motor driving the second conveyor, and reglates the drive motor such that the conveying velocity of the second conveyor is adjusted such that the pitch or spacing between successive printed products corresponds to the deliberately selected pitch or spacing.

Also disclosed is a stack-handling system having the ability to remove a completed stack from the stacking station and yet allow, if desired, continuous bag machine operation and, as a result, uninterrupted transfer of sheets or bags to the stacking stations.

An improved apparatus for stuffing newspapers includes a pair of stuffer assemblies and a single conveyor which transports an overlapping stream of newspapers from both stuffer assemblies to a receiving station. During operation of the stuffer assemblies, a series of assembled newspapers is delivered from a first stuffer assembly to the conveyor in an overlapping relationship. To enable the newspapers from the second stuffer assembly to be interspersed with the newspapers from the first stuffer assembly, the newspapers from the first stuffer assembly are spaced apart by a speed-up or accelerating assembly. A newspaper from the second stuffer assembly is then deposited between successive newspapers from the first stuffer assembly to form a single stream of unlapped newspapers. The unlapped stream of newspapers is formed into an overlapped stream by a shingling mechanism so that a single lapped stream of newspapers is transported by the conveyor to a receiving station.
