Abstract: A mooring loop is operative to secure a movable device such as a ship in connection with a bollard or other fixed structure. The exemplary mooring loop includes a continuous rope segment that includes at least one coil or a plurality of coils. The rope segment defining the mooring loop includes an inner core is surrounded by an outer jacket. A plurality of controlled failure points are included in the rope segment. The failure points enable the rope segment to permanently elongate in response to an applied tension force at a level above a working range, which elongation is visibly observable. The controlled failure point is defined between segmented ends of a severed inner core such that only the outer jacket is located at the controlled failure point.

Abstract: A bollard used in vessel mooring and like operations includes a bollard drum around which the line or hawser is wrapped several times to reduce the line tension at the free length behind the drum. A cleat is provided for holding fast the free length of the hawser at the reduced tension. The hawser may be quickly released from the bollard during emergency situations by simultaneously unlatching the cleat and releasing a lock on the bollard allowing it to rotate as the hawser is pulled off and finally lifted out of the cleat.

Abstract: A hydro-pneumatic device secures and releases a mooring or towing hawser to a vessel. A carriage reciprocates on a frame on the vessel and moves a bollard between one position securing a hawser to the towing or moored vessel and another position releasing the hawser. Movement of the carriage on the frame is accompanied by movement of a piston in a cylinder on the frame, the piston being connected to the carriage by a chain trained around a sprocket on the piston rod. A combination of liquid and gaseous fluid systems with various manual and automatic controls is connected to the cylinder and normally allows the piston to oscillate about a chosen average position. The fluid system by manual or automatic control lets the carriage move to a predetermined, extreme position on the frame. In such position the carriage actuates the bollard to release position, freeing the line. The carriage can be locked to the frame in the extreme position. Various safety and control devices are provided for the operation of the fluid systems.

Abstract: A mooring device having a pivotal joint which is subjected to shear strain or stress at a pin when in use. The pin is provided with at least one region having a cross section with a diameter smaller than that of the bearing surface of the pin. At least one pair of strain sensors is mounted in this region, and these are connected in an electrical circuit capable of indicating shear strain due to force applied to the pin. The pin is provided with means for keeping the plane of action of the strain sensors aligned substantially in the direction of any resultant applied force which produces the shear strain or stress.

Abstract: A retractable deck pin for cooperating with a boat line includes a cylindrical pin body which is axially movable in a pin guidance by an underdeck positioned actuator. A seal element is positioned in a clearance for sealing the pin body with respect to the pin guidance. The retractable deck pin is improved by providing a reservoir filled with an oil volume. The reservoir which is positioned under the pin guidance has a reservoir opening for receiving the pin body in the contained liquid volume. An air inlet is provided with a non-return air valve. When moving the pin base into the liquid volume, an air volume above the liquid volume will get pressurised. An airflow escapes from the reservoir via the clearance to the ambient. The air flow through the clearance counteracts a possible incoming flow of leaking.
