A longitudinally extending spring is disposed in a vertically aligned relationship with the lower and upper arms, and has opposed ends thereof pivotally connected with the spring mounts, such that outwardly extending biasing force generated by the spring assists in lifting the cover from the closed position and retains the cover in the open position.

At least one tarpaulin that covers the roof area of the top is supported by bows (8) that are supported on both ends by rollers (6), whereby the bows can slide in a longitudinal direction of the motor vehicle, on the longitudinal fascias (4) of the tarpaulin frame. The neighboring bows (8) are joined to each other in the region of both longitudinal sides of the tarpaulin by a bearing element (9) for the tarpaulin, whereby a reduced distance between both adjacent bows (8) results in the tarpaulin being folded between the adjacent bows in an upwards direction. A tarpaulin structure that enables the bearing elements to be joined to the bows or rollers in a simple manner is achieved by joining the rollers (6) to both the bearing elements (9) for the tarpaulin and to the shafts on the bows (8) so that they engage with each other in an exclusive manner in mutual positive fit.

The shell, attached to the hinge support by one or more hinges, pivots to open and closed positions. A lift mechanism, such as a hydraulic cylinder, linear actuator, or mechanical screw operates to open and close the shell. One end of the lift mechanism can be attached to a lower position on the hinge support. The other end is attached to an inside top surface of the shell. One or more lock blocks are positioned on a lower edge of the sidewalls of the shell. As the shell is lowered, the lock blocks engage and enter stake bed opening on the truck bed sidewalls. From the closed position, the lift mechanism first lifts a forward edge from the forward wall, the pushed the shell rearward to disengage or unlock the lock blocks, and then the shell is pivoted upwards. From the open position, the shell is lowered with the lock blocks entering the stake bed opening on the edge of the bed, the shell is pulled rearward to lock the lock blocks, and then the front edge of the shell is pulled downward to seal against the forward wall.

The limiting element includes a bolt and nut assembly interconnecting the extension mechanism and the adjusting member and is adjustable to control the expansion of the spring. The device operates to automatically tension the tarp cover when the cover is deployed.
