Abstract: Methods of applying a pattern and security devices are disclosed. In one arrangement, a receiving member having a layered structure is provided. The layered structure comprises a layer of phase change material. The phase change material is thermally switchable between a plurality of stable states having different refractive indices relative to each other. An embossing member is stamped into the receiving member. The embossing member heats a selected portion of the layer of phase change material via contact with the receiving member during the stamping. The heating thermally switches phase change material in the selected portion and thereby applies a pattern of different refractive indices to the layer of phase change material.

Abstract: A method for producing a printed material includes forming a color image having an image area ratio of 20% or less on a peripheral edge portion of a recording medium by using a coloring material; providing pressure-induced phase transition particles to a region of the recording medium, the region including the peripheral edge portion; bonding the color image and the pressure-induced phase transition particles onto the recording medium; and folding the recording medium having the color image and the pressure-induced phase transition particles bonded thereon and pressure-bonding the folded recording medium, or pressure-bonding the recording medium having the color image and the pressure-induced phase transition particles bonded thereon and another recording medium placed on top of each other. The pressure-induced phase transition particles contain a styrene resin and a (meth)acrylic acid ester resin, the styrene resin contains styrene and a vinyl monomer other than styrene as polymerization components, the (meth)acrylic acid ester resin contains at least two (meth)acrylic acid esters as polymerization components, and a mass ratio of the (meth)acrylic acid esters is 90 mass % or more of a total of all polymerization components of the (meth)acrylic acid ester resin. The pressure-induced phase transition particles have at least two glass transition temperatures, and a difference between the lowest glass transition temperature and the highest glass transition temperature among the glass transition temperatures of the pressure-induced phase transition particles is 30° C. or more.

Abstract: A card manufacturing system includes a locating device and a separation device. A laminate sheet comprising a plurality of cards is received by the locating device and is imaged using first and second imaging modalities. The first imaging modality identifies a location of each of the plurality of information carrying cards within the laminate sheet and the second imaging modality images at least one graphic formed on a surface of the laminate sheet. A position of the at least one graphic with respect to at least one information carrying card is determined and the plurality of cards are removed from the laminate sheet using information corresponding to the location of each of the plurality of information carrying cards when the position of the at least one graphic with respect to the information carrying cards is within a predetermined range.

Abstract: A security print medium for forming security documents therefrom, the security print medium comprising a core having opposing first and second sides. The core comprises a radiation-responsive substance distributed within the core across at least a first region of the core, the radiation-responsive substance being responsive to a predetermined input radiation by producing a predetermined output radiation. The security print medium further comprises a first encoding layer disposed on the first side of the core and a second encoding layer disposed on the second side of the core, each of the first and second encoding layers comprising an encoding material that modifies the intensity of the predetermined input radiation and/or the predetermined output radiation produced by the radiation-responsive substance transmitted through the respective encoding layer, wherein the first and second encoding layers overlap each other across the first region. The optical density of each of the first and second encoding layers varies across the first region in accordance with a predetermined pattern, the predetermined pattern defining one or more encoding features, such that when the security print medium is exposed to the predetermined input radiation, the output radiation detectable from one or each side of the security print medium varies across the first region in accordance with the one or more encoding features. The first and second encoding layers are configured such that when the security print medium is viewed in transmitted visible light, the intensity of visible light transmitted through the first encoding layer, the core and the second encoding layer in combination is uniform across the first region, such that the one or more encoding features is concealed.

Abstract: A laminate includes a recording layer, a translucent front covering layer and a security foil laminated between the recording layer and the front covering layer and sealed in the laminate. The security foil has a thickness that is ⅕ or less the thickness of the recording layer to prevent or reduce falsification reusing the security foil. The security foil includes a relief layer having a relief surface and a protective layer covering the relief surface. In the thickness direction of the laminate, the protective layer adheres to the recording layer and the relief layer adheres to the front covering layer. The adhesion strength between the security foil and the recording layer is higher than the adhesion strength between the security foil and the front covering layer.

Abstract: The invention relates to composite articles and laminated polymeric materials, for example, paper and plastic-based materials for tokens, and can be used in the manufacture of security articles. An article comprises a disc insert of laminated plastic and an outer metal. The insert includes stacked paper sheets impregnated with a polymer binder. Surface of each sheet is covered with a polymer layer and comprises visual and/or hidden security features. The ring and the disc insert are permanently joined together. At least one of the article components has an embossing. Dimensions of the article are in conformity with the relations: 0.8≤δ2/δ1 16 mm; Δ≤1, where D1 is outer diameter of the metal ring, excluding edge surface, mm; D2—diameter of the disc insert, mm; S1—area of the metal ring, excluding edge surface, mm2, S2—area of the disc insert, mm2; δ1—maximum thickness of the metal ring, mm; δ2—maximum thickness of the disc insert, mm; Δ—difference between maximum and minimum protruding elements of the metal component of the article, mm. The article has an enhanced level of security and is simple both in the manufacture and in its authentication.
