A rivet setter that can efficiently and smoothly perform, and reduce the takt time for a rivet setting operation. The rivet setter can be configured to set a rivet sequentially fed from a rivet supplying means by inserting the rivet into apertures formed at predetermined positions on workpieces. The rivet setter can have delivery paths for delivering the rivet one by one by sliding the rivet down to a settable position and can have a hanging support portion formed in the settable position in the tip end of the delivery path for supporting the head of rivet and for hanging the rivet shank downward. The rivet setter can be configured to enable the rivet to be set in the apertures of the workpieces by moving the hanging support portion substantially horizontally while keeping the rivet suspended in the hanging support portion and inserted into the apertures of the workpieces.

Disclosed is a binding machine for binding papers such as chits, documents and the like by means of a binding cord which is formed simultaneously with the binding operation from a plastic tube, so that the troublesome work of preparing the binding cord and inserting it into the binding bore can be dispensed with. The binding machine has means for forming a binding bore through stacked papers to be bound, means for feeding the plastic tube as the material for the binding cord by a length corresponding to the height or thickness of the stacked paper, and adapted to sever the fed plastic tube during the upward movement of the drill after the boring, and means for inserting the severed plastic tube and heating the both ends of the severed plastic tube under application of a pressure to form these ends into respective flanges, thereby to complete the binding. These means are all installed unitarily to render the machine compact and easy to operate. A rapid and easy binding can be made, even by those who are not skilled in operation of the machine, ensuring a good appearance and durability of the bound papers, without substantially damaging the papers.

A paper punch and binding apparatus has two punch mechanisms, one for punching round holes in a paper sheets stack and one for punching rectangular holes in another paper sheets stack. A single lever or crank simultaneously operates and drives a series of round end punches to shear the round holes and a punch plate with integral rectangular punch elements shear rectangular holes. A four-bar linkage connects the lever to the punch plate and the series of the punches in a manner that both the plate and punches are driven in a vertical straight line and with a greater mechanical advantage at the start and over the first increments of the punching operation. In a preferred embodiment, a binding station is provided in an apparatus base portion particularly for binding with a Douvry-type plastic resilient loops binding element. The binding station has an operating knob which operates a simple gear interconnect train for uncurling the resilient loops and allowing the punched hole stack to be inserted thereon. In an additional embodiment two rows of large and smaller diameter punches are provided in one round punch mechanism with an apertured translatable bar for rendering inoperative one or the other of these rows of punches.
