A method of making polymeric particulates wherein polymeric scrap material, virgin polymeric material and mixtures thereof are supplied to intermeshing extruder screws which are rotated to transport the polymeric material along their length and subject the polymeric material to solid state shear pulverization and in-situ polymer compatibilization, if two or more incompatible polymers are present. Uniform pulverized particulates are produced without addition of a compatibilizing agent. The pulverized particulates are directly melt processable (as powder feedstock) and surprisingly yield a substantially homogeneous light color product.

The invention provides an improved mixer section for a screw for a molding machine. The improved mixer section includes at least one conveying flight and at least one spill flight intersecting with the conveying flight. At least one notch is formed in the conveying flight to enable mixing between adjacent flow channels. The spill flight terminates near the output of the mixer to create a trap zone for any unmelts that reach that area of the mixer.

The invention relates to a process for controlling the degree of attrition or wear of a sealing screw (8) conveying a plasticized material, in particular synthetic plastic material, against an resistance, wherein the sealing screw (8) is bearingly supported within a screw housing (4). For this, the pressure of the conveyed material is measured at two locations spaced apart from each other, when seen in direction of conveyance. These two locations are disposed on both sides of a resistance body (12) towards which the sealing screw (8) conveys. The difference of the two measured values is used for indicating the degree of wear of the screw (5) or its housing, respectively. An apparatus suitable for performing this process is provided with an opening (18) which intersects the wall (20) of the housing (4) of the screw (5) in the region of its screw threads or in a region immediately neighboring thereto. A further opening (19) intersects the wall of the housing (4), the two openings (18, 19) being axially spaced apart from each other. To each one of the two openings (18, 19) a pressure sensor (22, 23) is connected.

This drum-shaped surface has a plurality of alternating input grooves output grooves extending in a generally axial direction. Lands extend between the input grooves and output grooves so as to separate the input grooves from the output grooves, with the length of each land being substantially equal to the length of the contiguous portion of the adjacent input and output grooves. There is a land cross-sectional shear area corresponding to each land that is equal to the length of the land multiplied by the clearance between the land and the inside surface of the barrel hollow space, and the summation of the land cross-sectional shear areas for all of the lands of the mixing element is greater than or equal to 95% of the flow cross-sectional area between the adjacent flights of the screw through which polymer passes immediately prior to entering the mixing element.

The screw has a final pumping-section of the screw that includes two or more channel depths which provides exit-pressure and flow stability. The channel-depth of the first segment of the final pumping-section is deeper than the channel depth of the second segment of the final pumping-section. The axial length of the first segment is preferably about two-thirds (null) of the final pumping-section length. The deeper first channel-depth acts as a reservoir resulting in smaller fluctuations in axial final fill-length as the input flow to the total pumping-section varies. The second channel-depth in the remaining approximate one-third (null) of the total pumping-section is preferably sized so as to optimize pressure development.
