Abstract: In a spherical lens surface processing method, a lens surface is ground to a spherical surface by forming a contact state in which a rotating cup-shaped grinding stone is placed in contact with the lens surface and a sphere center oscillation state in which the cup-shaped grinding stone oscillates along the lens surface centered on a sphere center. In the sphere center oscillation state, the distance from the center of the sphere center oscillation to the contact point of the cup-shaped grinding stone with the lens surface is set to be the same as the radius of the spherical surface. The oscillation width of the sphere center oscillation is set so that the contact point of the cup-shaped grinding store with the lens surface can move from one peripheral edge of the lens surface past the lens center on the lens surface to the other peripheral edge.

Abstract: An optical element processing tool for grinding or polishing an optical element includes: a base plate including a fixing region having a predetermined curvature; and a plurality of grindstones each formed in a columnar body having a same initial height, one end surface of the columnar body having an initial shape molded into a first spherical shape conforming to a processing target spherical shape of the optical element, and the other end surface of the columnar body being fixed to the fixing region of the base plate. A grindstone deviant from a condition among the plurality of grindstones, which is the grindstone not meeting a condition determined by a processing tool diameter of the processing tool, includes an outer end portion cut out at least in parallel to a center axis of the base plate so as to meet the condition.

Abstract: According to this lens-centering method, a state in which a lens is sandwiched at prescribed pressing force between a lens holder and a lens processing dish is brought about. Next, the lens-processing dish is rotated at slow speed about a rotation axis line that passes through the center and the spherical center of the lens-processing surface thereof, and is made to oscillate at a slight angle about the spherical center of the lens-processing surface as the center of oscillating action. The spherical center of a first lens spherical surface of the lens is guided to the spherical center of a lens-retaining surface of the lens holder, and the spherical center of a second lens spherical surface is guided to the spherical center of the lens-processing surface. A lens mounted in the spherical center-type processing machine can be set to an accurately centered state thereby.

Abstract: A lens processing system used for removing a lens blank (98, 110) from an edging block (40). The system includes an elongated collet (22) that engages the mating edging block (40). The block (40) includes an enlarged groove (41) that receives a pair of blades (65, 66) extended upwardly from the floor (75) of the collet (22). Each lens blank (98,110) is formed to include a series of surface markings (191,192) to verify proper functioning of the edging machine that forms a finished lens. Each lens blank also includes a series of circular markings (117,133) arranged in diagonal rows to verify the accurate drilling of bores with the lens blank (98,110).

Abstract: A method of cutting a workpiece made of a highly-hard material is provided. The workpiece is cut by a machining device including a workpiece holder that holds the workpiece, a spindle device that rotates the workpiece holder, a tool holder that holds a tool, and a relative moving mechanism that relatively moves the workpiece holder and the tool holder at least in two axial directions orthogonal to each other. In the machining device, positioning errors in the axial directions are within 5 nm.

Abstract: A method and system for the manufacture of ophthalmic lenses comprising a computer (102) and a CNC machining platform (104) in operative connection with the computer. The CNC machining platform includes a mounting stage (110), a block (106) in releasable connection with the mounting stage, and a machining tool (112). When an unfinished lens blank (108) is properly mounted on the block, the computer is operative to direct the CNC machining platform to perform both back surface generation and patternless edging of the lens blank in one machining cycle. The computer is further operative to direct the CNC machining platform to machine a lap tool for each lens and machine a block for receiving each lens. The block is machined by the platform to include scribe lines for facilitating proper alignment of lens blank.

Abstract: An intermediate lens pad having a side secured to curved surface of a lens tool when the pad is in use. The pad has a surface on its other side which is substantially smooth, but which is formed with a multiplicity of substantially uniformly distributed holes or recesses which are at least of an order of magnitude smaller than the pad itself, or the surface is defined by the outer surfaces of a multiplicity of protuberances uniformly distributed over the pad such that the minimum space between adjacent protuberances is of an order of magnitude smaller than the pad itself. A lens surfacing pad having a peel-off adhesive on one side and a working surface on its other side, can be secured by its adhesive side to the intermediate pad so that it inhibits movement between the pads during surfacing, whilst allowing manual removal of the surfacing pad for replacement.

Abstract: A polishing apparatus includes a polishing jig. The polishing jig includes an elastic balloon member, a fixture, and a fluid supply portion. The fixture airtightly closes the rear opening portion of the balloon member. The fluid supply portion supplies a fluid into a space formed by the fixture and balloon member. The balloon member has a cup shape constructed by a dome portion and a cylinder portion extending backward from the outer periphery of the dome portion. The fixture fixes the opening portion of the cylinder portion of the balloon member.
