Abstract: A system and method of manufacturing an aluminum fuel cell cradle includes providing a negative cast mold having cavities to form the cradle and providing a feeding mechanism disposed about the mold and in fluid communication with the cavities thereof. The feeding mechanism includes a plurality of primary risers connected to and in fluid communication with cavities. The method further includes melting a first metallic material to define a molten metallic material, and moving the mold to a vertical casting orientation about a rotational axis, while feeding molten metallic material through the runner to the cavities, and cooling the molten metallic material to define a solidified metallic material. A second solidification time in the risers is greater than a first solidification time in the mold such that shrinkage of the solidified metallic material occurs in the risers away from the mold.

Abstract: A breathable salt core is provided that is placed in a cavity of a casting mold in order to mold a hollow part of a cast product and that is dissolved and removed after casting, the breathable salt core being formed by powder molding innumerable salt particles into a predetermined shape corresponding to the hollow part, wherein a gap that can retain a gas remaining in the cavity in a casting process is formed between the innumerable salt particles that have been powder molded. The breathable salt core thus manufactured assures that residual gas within the cavity pushed by the molten metal to enter the gap formed between salt particles of the salt core, thereby avoiding any incomplete filling of the molten metal, and which can be formed with a simple production process at a low cost.

Abstract: A surgical retractor for illuminating a surgical field includes an ergonomic handle, a retractor blade coupled with the handle, a quick release mechanism, and an illuminator blade. The retractor blade is adapted to engage and retract tissue, and the quick release mechanism is adapted to couple the handle with the retractor blade. The illuminator blade acts as a waveguide to transmit light by total internal reflection. Light is extracted from the illuminator to illuminate the surgical field. The retractor blade is releasable from the handle without requiring uncoupling of the illuminator blade from the handle and also without requiring optical uncoupling of the illuminator blade from a light source. The retractor may also be adapted to evacuate smoke from the surgical field.
