The magnetic field may be generated in a variety of ways. Apparatus for practicing the invention may include permanent magnets, either stationary or movable, or an electromagnet or electromagnets arranged with respect to an ion exchange column to create a magnetic field in the resin in the column. When using an electromagnet, magnetic material, such as a cast iron rod or bar, is placed in the resin bed to direct and concentrate the magnetic field in the resin.

The water treatment system typically treats the water containing at least some undesirable species before delivering the treated water to a point of use. The water treatment system has a reservoir system in line with an electrochemical device such as an electrodeionization device. The water treatment system has a sensor or a set of sensors for measuring at least one property of the water or an operating condition of the treatment system. The water treatment system also has a controller for adjusting or regulating at least one operating parameter of the treatment system or a component of the water treatment system to optimize the operation and performance of the system or components of the system to supply water tailored to quality requirements.

The treatment system can be operated to reduce the likelihood of formation of any scale that can be generated during normal operation of an electrochemical device. The formation of scale in the treatment system, including its wetted components, may be inhibited by reversing or substituting the flowing liquid having hardness-causing species with another liquid having a low tendency to produce scale, such as a low LSI water. Various arrangements of components in the treatment system can be flushed by directing the valves and the pumps of the system to displace liquid having hardness-causing species with a liquid that has little or no tendency to form scale.

An improved process for regenerating the ion exchange resin in a water softening system. The process substantially reduces the amount of water and salt required for regeneration of the resin. The process includes the steps of venting the resin tank to the atmosphere and draining eventually all of the water from around the resin. Next, a brine solution is added to the resin tank. This is allowed to remain in contact with the resin until the resin is regenerated, preferably aided by energizing a vibrator positioned on the exterior of the tank. Next, the brine solution is drained from the resin tank which is then filled with water to rinse the brine from the resin. After rinsing, the resin is ready for use.

A cleaning apparatus has means for introducing a contaminated resin and means for introducing a carrier fluid to a treatment zone in a countercurrent flow, means for collecting cleaned resin from the treatment zone, means for removing the carrier fluid from the treatment zone, and ultrasonic energy means for applying an ultrasonic energy field to the countercurrent flow in the treatment zone.

In accordance with an aspect, provided is method comprising receiving an inlet brine stream comprising water and a solute; producing a concentrated brine stream by contacting the inlet brine stream with an ion exchange resin configured to extract water from the inlet brine stream, the ion exchange resin comprising a plurality of pores adapted to receive water molecules; ceasing the contact of the ion exchange resin with the inlet brine stream and the concentrated brine stream; and evaporating at least a portion of the water contained in the ion exchange resin aided by unsaturated air with less than 100% relative humidity using an evaporation unit.
