    Abstract: An appliance for establishing a bacteriologically safe connection between a respirator and an endotracheal tube comprises a head fitting, which is adapted to be mounted on the endotracheal tube. A flexible tube for supplying inhalable gas and a flexible withdrawing tube for withdrawing exhaled air are connected to said head fitting. An exhalation valve is incorporated in the withdrawing tube and is incorporated by a controller in step with the artificial respiration. An inflatable bag, which is manually operable to effect artificial respiration, is connected by a tee fitting to the supply tube, which is connected by a bacteria filter and the controller to the respirator. The inflatable bag is provided with a sensor, which is connected by a signal line to the controller and causes the latter to close and open the exhalation valve in step with the manually effected artificial respiration.

    Abstract: A scavenging valve for anesthesia gas release in pediatric anesthesia apparatus is of generally conical configuration and has an axial bore extending therethrough from an open base to an open apex with a plurality of longitudinally extending fins around the bore in the valve. The scavenging valve has a plurality of external fin-like projections at its base. Each of the fin-like projections has a hole formed therethrough for facilitating releasable affixing of the scavenging valve to an operating table to prevent shifting of the valve. A control valve comprises a pair of nipples each of generally conical configuration in base to base relation with an axial bore extending therethrough from one open apex end to the other. The control valve has a radially extending hole formed therethrough at the juncture of the bases of the nipples. The bore tapers down to each of the apices from the bases. The control valve couples an anesthesia bag to the scavenging valve and has a gas flow control and shutoff plate pivotally mounted in the bore thereof in the area of the bases of the control valve. A manually operable control member is provided outside the control valve. A pin extends through the hole through the control valve and couples the control member to the valve plate in a manner whereby the valve plate rotates in correspondence with rotation of the control member.

    Abstract: Anesthetic vaporizer of the flow-through type having a calibrated flow control valve unit for proportional distribution of the inlet gas between a vaporizing chamber and a main bypass passage to obtain a desired anesthetic concentration. A rotary, multiple-port valve with a multiplicity of laminar flow-type passages in parallel is operable in discrete steps for adding the anesthetic vapor from the chamber in predictable increments to a preset flow of the inlet gas for proportional gas division. An auxiliary gas bypass for temperature compensation has a cone-type valve with restricted opening controlled by a temperature responsive motor in the vaporizing chamber. A wick assembly in the anesthetic vaporizing chamber guides the chamber gas through a multiplicity of parallel passages formed by stacked sheets of absorbent and corrugated materials respectively, to obtain maximum vaporization of the anesthetic.

    Abstract: In a system for administering a volatile inhalation anesthetic agent to a patient at a flow rate that is in excess of the patient''s uptake rate and wherein a portion of the excess anesthetic agent is exhausted from the system, a method and apparatus for recovering the exhausted anesthetic agent. Recovery is effected by collecting the exhausted gas and removing the water vapor either by condensation or with a hygroscopic material. The anesthetic agent is then extracted from the dried gas by a cryogenic process in which the vapors in the anesthetic agent are condensed to a liquid phase or by an absorbent material which is processed later to remove the agent. When employing the condensing process, the anesthetic condensate is collected and may be readmitted directly into the anesthetic system.
