摘要: A method of storing forage products in a mass includes the steps of coating all of the exposed surfaces of the mass with a melted tallow, and allowing the tallow composition to cool to seal the surface of the mass. The tallow is preferably applied at a rate of between about 0.4 and about 0.8 pounds per square foot of surface area, and penetrates to a depth of between about 1/4 and 3/4, forming a protective layer or shell with the forage products. The tallow preferably has a titre of between about 47 and about 49.

摘要: Process and generator for generating a pesticidal gas mixture of phosphine gas and air for fumigating an enclosed environment, e.g. a grain silo, with phosphine. Air, moisture content adjusted by drying or humidifying, is passed through a porous bed of aluminum phosphide or magnesium phosphide, preferably in a throw-a-way cartridge. The resulting mixture of air and phosphine gas is passed into the space. Typical humidities (which determines the phosphine concentration) are 4 g/m.sup.3 for "flow through" conditions or 12 g/m.sup.3 for "one shot" conditions of fumigation. The cartridge is fitted directly in sealing relationship between inlet and outlet adaptors to serve as the gas generator vessel of the apparatus. The cartridge, completely filled with metal phosphide in powder or granulate form, has cylindrical gas-tight side walls, flexible and stretchable to allow for expansion of the metal phosphide during hydrolysis, and porous end walls.

摘要: A feed for hens which serves to reduce the cholesterol content of eggs laid by the hens, the feed being made up of laying mash and dehydrated cabbage in a ratio of about three parts of laying mash to two parts of cabbage by weight. The cabbage has been dehydrated by a process which does not raise its temperature to the point where enzymes therein are inactivated. It is believed that the enzymes in the dehydrated cabbage serve to induce cytochrome P-450 in the hen to break down the cholesterol in the body of the hen and, so, reduce the amount going into the eggs.

摘要: Moist vegetables (2) undergo at least one pressing operation (3) and are introduced into a drier (9) of which the heater elements are fed with vapor recompressed by a compressor unit (20). The juice (4) from the last pressing operation acts as the cold fluid in an evaporator (5) of which the tube stack is fed by the mixture of air and vapor (10) issuing from the moist vegetables being dried. The vapor (6) produced by the evaporator (5) feeds the compressor unit (20). The concentrated juice (7) is used to re-steep the moist vegetables (2) before they enter the pressing zone (3).

摘要: Material is provided for drying cut plants. The material includes a drying agent providing a basic pH in a solution of at least 11 and having properties of becoming at least partially insoluble at a pH no greater than approximately 13.4. The drying agent has properties of saponifying the wax on the stems as the plant dries and as the pH of the drying agent accordingly increases. The drying agent is selected from a group consisting of the carbonates, phosphates and silicates of at least one of sodium and potassium and a combination of the hydroxides, carbonates and bicarbonates of at least one of sodium and potassium. The drying agent may have a concentration of about 3 to 6 pounds per ton of dried cut plants. The material also includes a mold inhibiting agent having properties of remaining inactive until the occurrence in the plant of conditions inducing molding and having properties of reacting with the moisture, under conditions of temperature and moisture inducing molding, to inhibit the formation of the mold. The mold inhibiting agent may be selected from a group consisting of acids and acid salts of at least one of propionic, sorbic, acetic and carboxylic acids and other fatty acids. The agent may have a concentration between approximately 21/2 and 5 pounds per ton of dried cut plants.

摘要: A process for stabilizing and preserving harvested vegetables in an acidic environment within a silo. The acidity results from the significant degradation of starch, complex carbohydrates and fermentable carbohydrates. A mixture of bacteria capable of degrading the complex carbohydrates, bacteria capable of causing lactic fermentation of fermentable sugars, and enzymes having a complementary action capable of degrading the complex carbohydrates into fermentable sugars which may be used by the bacteria is used in the process. The bacteria composition may comprise a mixture of fungic amylases, amylases of bacterial origin, amyloglucosidase, and hemicellulase.

摘要: Preservative for feeds which contains a liquid mixture of ammonium propionate, propylene glycol and water. The molar ratio of ammonium propionate to propylene glycol is from 1:0.1 to 1:0.7. The liquid mixture contains from 20 to 30 weight percent water, 44.2 to 64.6 weight percent ammonium propionate and 5.4 to 29.5 weight percent propylene glycol. Adequate preservation is ensured by the addition of from 0.3 to 3 wt % of the liquid mixture to the feed.
