Abstract: Aspects of this disclosure include a system for providing non-contact, computer-vision based monitoring of the health and pollination activity of a beehive. The system may include camera positioned proximate to a beehive. The camera may include an onboard processor that analyzes video of the beehive captured by the camera and calculates an activity value that estimates a number of bees moving about the beehive. The video calculated activity values may be uploaded to a server where they can be accessed via a user device. The user device may allow the user to display interactive plots of the activity values over a variety of time bases. The disclosed beehive monitoring system relies on relatively lost-cost hardware and requires neither modification to the hive nor special constraints on the placement of the camera.

Abstract: There is provided a hive body or a kit for assembling a hive body for use in a beehive enclosure, comprising: panels defining an interior space and an aperture configured to allow movement of the bees into the interior space; a brood chamber emplaced within the interior space, the brood chamber defining an internal cavity adapted for housing comb frames, and being displaceable between a stored position within the interior space and an inspection position when said brood chamber is displaced outwards from within the interior space to permit a beekeeper access to internal cavity of the brood chamber; and a rear door moveable between a closed position to an open position which enables the brood chamber to be moved into the inspection position where the beekeeper can have access to internal cavity of the brood chamber to maintain the bees.

Abstract: A beehive assembly has a column of hive bodies which are releasably connected to a sheet metal spine of a sleeve which encircles a post mounted to the ground. The sleeve has a rack which engages a pinion mounted to the post with a handle which rotates the pinion and moves the sleeve and attached beehive vertically. A latching pawl is selectively released by a foot pedal mounted to the post. By turning the crank the column of hive bodies is caused to ascend into an operating position where the bee colony within the hive bodies is elevated above the ground, or is lowered to be accessible by a beekeeper.

Abstract: An artificially-created honey-yielding environment is established, including a hive and an associated flora cell, within which first and second plant populations cohabit. Within the cell, honey-producing insects from the hive are permitted to forage. One of the populations has been artificially introduced. The other may be indigenous to the cell. The first plant population serves as a primary source of nectar which yields bioactive honey and the second serves as a source of a nutrient, such as protein, which is not abundantly available from the first species at a nutritionally adequate level for sustaining the metabolism and energy of the foraging honey-producing insects for returning to the hive. The first flora population may be a Leptospermum species. An example of the second is Corymbia maculata.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a wasp catcher, and more particularly, to a wasp catcher that can isolate only wasps using a trap structure on a front surface of a hive without using an attractant and can easily separate and remove only caught and isolated wasps or killed wasps. The present disclosure provides a wasp catcher detachably attached to a hive and not using an attractant. The wasp catcher can guide wasps to move to a second catching portion through a first catching portion using flight straightness and phototaxis of the wasps and can allow bees moved to the second catching portion to exit the second catching portion, thereby catching and isolating only the wasps in the second catching portion.

Abstract: An artificial beehive includes at least one artificial hive chamber for storing a bee colony and/or honey produced by a bee colony; with at least one removable frame stored in the hive chamber, the frame serving as a supporting base for the production of a honeycomb, and being removable from the hive chamber for extraction of honey from the honeycomb; and at least one cover that closes the hive chamber from an external environment. The hive chamber includes at least one interior surface having grooves extending therealong, the grooves having a depth of between about 1 mm and about 6 mm, and arranged in a predetermined and repeatable pattern.

Abstract: A preferred embodiment provides a reconfigurable and removable cover securely fixed to an exterior of a hive structure. The preferred material of the cover provides both temperature and humidity control through use of various layers which allow proper air flow. Temperature control is provided by a novel combination of heat absorptive and heat reflective layers and surfaces. A reduction of heat loss in the hive structure reduces the amount of energy required to keep the hive at the desired temperature thereby preserving food resources and preventing colony collapse. The heat reflective layers cool the hive in the summer by reflecting solar radiation.
