A cutting element for use in a cutting operation, comprising a cutting edge (CE) capable of cutting out material from a workpiece during the operation, to form therein a workpiece corner of angle alpha. There exists at least one view of the cutting edge in which a portion of the cutting edge is delimitable by a first (L1) and a second (L2) line oriented tangentially to the portion of the cutting edge portion at respective tangency points A and B. The lines form therebetween a cutting angle corresponding to the workpiece corner angle alpha and have a vertex 0. For a bisector of the cutting angle intersecting the portion of the cutting edge at the point C, the projection C of the point C of the portion of the cutting edge on a line OL passing through the vertex 0 perpendicularly to the plane of the one view is located between projections A1 and B′ of the respective points A and B of the portion of the cutting edge on the line OL.
Abstract:
A tool for cyclo-palloid gear hobbing includes a head and a plurality of milling inserts protruding from a front side thereof. The milling inserts are mounted, two by two, in chip removal units that are detachably connected to the head. Each milling insert is clamped by a wedge and a screw that are easy to access. The wedge acts tangentially against the milling insert behind which there is a tangential support in the form of a shoulder. By clamping the milling insert with a respective wedge the milling inserts can be mounted and dismounted in a simple way, and each group of wedge+milling insert+tangential support can be located tangentially and thereby efficiently carry the cutting forces acting on the milling insert. In further aspects, an insert holder intended for the tool, a chip removal unit of an insert holder and an insert kit are disclosed.

A cutting insert according to an embodiment of the present invention includes an upper surface, a side surface, and a first cutting edge located at an intersection of the upper surface and the side surface. The upper surface includes a pair of raised parts located opposite to each other with a perpendicular bisector of the first cutting edge interposed therebetween. A top of each of the pair of raised parts includes at least two protrusions oriented toward a direction along the perpendicular bisector in a top view. Each of the at least two protrusions includes a first protrusion located on a side closest to the perpendicular bisector, and a second protrusion which is located on a side further away from the perpendicular bisector than the first protrusion, and is located at a higher position than the first protrusion. A cutting tool including the cutting insert, and a method of manufacturing a machined product by using the cutting tool are also provided.

A cutting tool includes a cutting insert releasably retained therein. The cutting insert has top and bottom surfaces and a peripheral surface extending therebetween. The cutting insert does not include any clamping bore for receiving a clamping component therein. The cutting insert may having unitary, one-piece construction and be formed of a superabrasive material. The cutting insert may have a two-headed arrow shape, or similar shapes, such that the body of the cutting insert is small relative to the cutting regions thereof. The cutting tool includes a top clamp for clamping the cutting insert in an insert pocket. The top clamp has an asymmetrical shape and engages the cutting insert in one engagement region on the top surface, and in one engagement region on the peripheral surface. The cutting insert engages the insert pocket at the bottom surface, and in three spaced apart engagement regions on the peripheral surface.

A cutting edge includes a cutting edge portion extending from the outer peripheral side to the tool center axis side of a cutting tool body when the cutting insert is attached to a mounting seat, reaching a first plane including the tool center axis, and traversing from one side to the other side of a second plane which is perpendicular to the first plane and which includes the tool center axis.

A mechanical clamping tool holder for indexable inserts includes a tool holder body and complementary clamping mechanisms. The tool holder body accommodates several novel clamping mechanism types as well as other common clamping mechanisms. The tool holder body includes an insert pocket, and a complementary clamp pocket to assemble several clamping mechanisms that engage and clamp the inserts in the working position. The insert receiving pocket also includes a threaded bore to secure the shim seat and the clamp pocket includes a threaded bore for securing the clamping mechanisms.

A cutting insert according to an aspect of the present invention is provided with two opposite first surfaces, and a peripheral surface extending between the two first surfaces. A first cutting edge is formed on an edge of one first surface of the two first surfaces. A rake surface associated with the first cutting edge extends on the one first surface. A second cutting edge is formed on an edge of one second surface of two opposite second surfaces in the peripheral surface. A rake surface associated with the second cutting edge extends on the one second surface. The second cutting edge has a different function from the first cutting edge.

A cutting edge exchange type cutting tool includes a cutting insert and a body having a chip seat to which the cutting insert is attached. The cutting insert has a first inclined surface part and a second inclined surface part. In the first wall surface, a first abutting part which abuts on the first inclined surface part is formed. In the second wall surface, a second abutting part which abuts on the second inclined surface part is formed. The first and second inclined surface parts are formed with flat surfaces. The first inclined surface part is inclined at an obtuse angle to the bottom surface. The second inclined surface part is inclined at an acute angle to the bottom surface.

A double-sided milling cutting insert has usable upper and lower faces. The upper face has a polygonal shape with curved edges. The lower face has a rotationally symmetrical relation to the upper face. Flank faces connect edges of the upper face to corresponding edges of the lower face. Upper cutting edges are formed on one of the edges of the upper face. The upper chip-forming portions have rake faces inclined downwardly from the upper cutting edges inwardly of the cutting insert and a plurality of protrusions arranged along inner boundaries of the rake faces for deflecting chips. When the cutting insert is mounted on the cutting tool, a width of the rake face of the upper chip-forming portion adjacent to an edge portion forming a main cutting edge gradually increases in a direction going away from a rotational axis of the cutting tool.
