摘要: A mastless vertical axis wind turbine that comprises a plurality of sails that rotate about a vertical axis under the influence of wind. A platform is connected to and in tension with the plurality of sails at one or more points about the bottom of the plurality of the sails. Also, an external frame is connected to and in tension with the plurality of sails at one or more points about the top of the plurality of the sails. The external frame itself comprises a plurality of legs that converge above the plurality of sails at a central point about the vertical axis of rotation and extend beyond the path swept by the plurality of sails. A coupling mechanism connects one or more of the plurality of legs to the plurality of sails and allows the sails to rotate about the vertical axis of rotation while the legs remain stationary.

摘要: Wind turbine systems with wind directors are disclosed. The wind director is configured to simultaneously reduce drag force applied to a returning blade and increase force applied to an advancing blade. In some embodiments, the wind director includes an inlet having an inlet width configured to receive wind at a proximal end, and an outlet having an outlet width on a distal end opposite the proximal end. The wind director is configured to position near a wind turbine such that wind exiting the outlet is applied to an advancing blade of the wind turbine. Furthermore, the wind director provides a barrier to a returning blade opposite the first blade, thereby reducing drag force applied thereto. The wind director may further comprise a secondary duct which has an angled outlet and is configured to apply an additional force to the returning blade.

摘要: A pitch bearing for coupling a rotor blade to a hub of a wind turbine includes an outer race configured to be coupled to the hub, an inner race rotatable relative to the outer race and configured to be coupled to the rotor blade, and a first plurality of line contact rolling elements. The outer race defines a first outer raceway wall and the inner race defines a first inner raceway wall. The first plurality of line contact rolling elements is disposed between the first inner and outer raceway walls. Each of the plurality of line contact rolling elements defines a predetermined contact angle. The predetermined contact angle is defined as an angle between a reference line extending perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of one of the plurality of line contact rolling elements and a reference line extending parallel to a horizontal plane of the pitch bearing. Further, the predetermined contact angle includes angles between 0 degrees (°) and 90°.

摘要: An orthogonal power unit includes blade sections with pressure sensitive elements on either side of a foil contour, such as at the widest point. Vents are positioned rearward of the pressure sensitive elements. A controller, such as a linkage or electronic controller, senses a pressure differential between the pressure sensitive elements. When the pressure differential exceeds a threshold, a valve coupled to the vent on the low-pressure side is opened to release pressurized fluid from that vent. The fluid may be combustible gas and an ignitor may be incorporated into the turbine blade to ignite the gas. A channel may pass through the blade sections and a back-pressure valve in each valve section couples the channel to a cavity from which fluid is released through the vents.
