摘要: Disclosed are a receiving device and a channel estimation method that are capable of using the amplitude information of a received signal to perform proper channel estimation. In the device, a detection section (102) extracts the amplitude information of the OOK modulation signal sequence in which a known CES (Channel Estimation Sequence) composed of data “0” and “1” is OOK (On Off Keying)-modulated to obtain a detected signal sequence. A “1”-detection section (1042) extracts only the sample value corresponding to the data “1” from the sample values of the detected signal sequence to obtain an extracted signal sequence. A correlation calculating section (1043) performs the correlation calculation between the extracted signal sequence and the CES. A propagation delay estimation section (1044) estimates the propagation delay amount of a CIR (Channel Impulse Response) from the correlation calculation. An amplitude coefficient estimation section (1045) estimates the amplitude coefficient of the CIR from the correlation calculation.

摘要: Teachings presented herein offer reduced computational complexity for symbol sequence estimation, and also provide for the generation of soft bit values representing the reliability of that estimation. A demodulator is configured to generate these soft bit values by identifying a candidate value for each symbol in the sequence which is more likely than at least one other in a defined set of candidate values. Based on the candidate value identified for each symbol, the demodulator forms a reduced set of candidate values for the symbol by selecting as many additional candidate values from the defined set as are needed to have complementary bit values for each bit value in that identified candidate value. The demodulator calculates soft bit values for the symbol sequence based on a sequence estimation process whose state space for each symbol is constrained to the corresponding reduced set.

摘要: Soft bit values are generated for received symbols transmitted based on a modulation constellation by demodulating the received symbols via a sequence of demodulation stages, each demodulation stage producing a symbol decision based on an effective constellation. Each effective constellation used by a non-final one of the demodulation stages includes subsets of centroids approximating a region of the modulation constellation. Adjacent ones of the subsets have one or more common points so that at least two adjacent subsets overlap. The soft bit values for the symbol decisions are determined based on detection metrics computed during demodulation for the points included in the effective constellation constructed incrementally over the sequence of demodulation stages, the effective constellation produced by the final demodulation stage being devoid of one or more points included in the modulation constellation.

摘要: A receiver includes a constellation processing module and a plurality of demodulation stages. The constellation processing module groups points of a constellation associated with a transmitted signal into a plurality of subsets, were at least two adjacent ones of the subsets have one or more common constellation points so that the at least two adjacent subsets overlap. The constellation processing module also determines a centroid-based value for each of the subsets of constellation points and groups the centroid-based values into one or more sets. Each of the demodulation stages except for the last demodulation stage localizes a search for a final symbol decision using the set of centroid-based values input to or selected by the demodulation stage as constellation points. The last demodulation stage determines the final symbol decision using the subset of constellation points input to or selected by the last demodulation stage.

摘要: Modems, methods, and computer program products select a data rate based on error signals in a modem. In an illustrative embodiment, error signals representing the difference between an output of an equalizer and an output of a detector are accumulated and an average error value is computed therefrom. A signal to noise ratio is determined using the average error value. The signal to noise ratio is then used to select a data rate. In another illustrative embodiment, the mean squared error at the output of the equalizer is determined and then used, along with the probability of error in correctly detecting a symbol, to select a data rate. Incorrect decisions in detecting received data symbols can cause a catastrophic failure in a decision feedback equalizer used in a modem receiver as errors are repeatedly fed back causing the tap coefficients for the equalizer filters to be shifted from their normal operating values. By adjusting the data rate in accordance with the error signals generated in a modem receiver, the decision feedback equalizer can operate with greater stability as the data rate can be reduced in response to increased noise conditions.

摘要: Methods and systems for effectuating simultaneous transmission of a standard analog television video signal and a data signal. A transmitter system comprises an analog video signal path and a data signal path. The data signal path produces a data signal that is added to, combined with, or otherwise imposed on the video signal, so as to be substantially in quadrature with the video signal as sensed by television receivers in the broadcast region. An abatement signal is generated and applied to the video signal in order to correct for effects of the data on the video signal. The abatement signal is generated based on feedback control metric signals obtained from receiver emulation which uses as input a signal corresponding to the television signal as transmitted. The feedback control metric signals can also used to control the modulation of the data, for example, by adjusting the interpolation of the data based on the amplitude and frequency responses of the data signal. The transmitter system also comprises a subsystem which produces phase and amplitude correction signals for compensating for non-linear distortions in the transmitter system. The metrics can also be used in combination with a reference path to control timing of the data signal as applied to the video signal for output to the transmitter. Receivers according to various embodiments of the present invention separate the data from the video signal, do appropriate processing on the data signal in order to extract and recover the data, and forward the data for output. Such receivers can also include or contain, if desired, output to television receivers for rendering television programming.
