Televisions, especially HDTV, require tremendous bandwidth, however a time interval to switch communication channels may result in the loss of several image frames or a large portion of a single image frame. Unfortunately, small glitches in television signals are not tolerable since this affects the quality of the entertainment. Thus, wireless television tuners are unacceptable to most users because of frequency of glitches occurring as a result of channel hopping. A novel wireless television tuner system is thus disclosed that switchesnullhopsnullbetween frequency channels for transmitting television data to the wireless television tuner. The novel tuner uses a fractional-N (FRAC-N) synthesizer with an improved settling time in order to reduce potential glitches occurring as a result of the channel hopping.

A rapid scanning radio with multi-mode local oscillator control. In one embodiment a phase-locked loop is closed for tuning to all frequencies of interest, and each time the loop locks a DAC is loaded with successive digital values until a value corresponding to the steady-state VCO tuning voltage is found for the currently tuned channel. That digital value is stored for later recall as the tuning value for that channel. Once digital values are determined for all the tunable frequencies in the radio, the loop is opened for high-speed scanning under open-loop control of the DAC.

Apparatus for acquiring and processing incoming radio signals received from a plurality of stations, the frequencies of which are contained in a predetermined frequency band.The received signals are mixed with a local oscillator frequency which is repeatedly scanning the input frequency band at a fast rate produced from a frequency synthesizer whose control input is modified step by step to cycle through a corresponding predetermined set of programming values. The sweep rate of the programming value of the frequency synthesizer is so high that the stabilization time for the frequency at its output is significant with respect to the dwell time of the control signal of each programming value.The varying frequency signals at the output of the mixer are applied to the inputs of band pass filtering channels, to derive the frequency range of the incoming signals for frequency selective circuitry arranged to demodulate the received signals. A tuning system for a television receiver includes a phase locked loop (PLL) configuration and an automatic fine tuning (AFT) configuration which are selectively enabled to operate to tune the receiver to nonstandard as well as standard frequency RF carriers which may be provided by cable and master antenna systems. After the selection of a new channel, the operations of the PLL and AFT configurations are sequentially enabled by a mode control apparatus. During the operation of the AFT configuration, an offset detector determines when the frequency of the local oscillator signal is caused to be more than a predetermined offset from its value established during the previous operation of the PLL configuration. In response, the mode control unit reestablishes the operation of the PLL configuration. Channel selection apparatus causes a new channel to be selected after a predetermined number of alternate operating cycles of the two configurations.

A synthesizer type receiver where frequency conversion of a received signal is performed by the use of a signal formed in a PLL, and the signal frequency is changed by changing the frequency division ratio of a variable frequency divider in the PLL to thereby change the received frequency. The receiver comprises a detector for detecting reception of a broadcast wave signal; a memory where data areas correspond respectively to a plurality of station selector keys; and a control unit having a data table with a data section relative to frequencies of broadcasting stations receivable in divided areas of the whole area where the receiver is to be used. In a preset mode, the reception frequency band is scanned by changing the frequency of the signal through change of the frequency division ratio, and when the reception frequency at the time of detection of the broadcast wave signal by the detector during the scan is included in the frequency data stored in any preselected divided area, the data relative to the reception frequency is stored in the data area of the memory, and the broadcasting station being currently received is preset in the station selector key corresponding to the data stored area in accordance with the storage.
