The retention member defines a second passage configured to receive at least one of the neutral conductors therethrough. The duct sleeve member is flexible. The retention member maintains the duct sleeve member in an open configuration when the retention member is disposed in the first passage. The duct sleeve member is selectively collapsible about the at least one neutral conductor from the open configuration to a collapsed configuration by withdrawing the retention member from the first passage.

The invention comprises a reinforcement arrangement used on connections of submarine cables, consisting of a body made up of a material reinforced with fibres of great mechanical strength that are arranged in a radial manner on the connection area of the cable and on the adjacent area of the outside covering of the cable, joined to the outer part of said cable through a mechanical attaching element. The invention is applied as protective elements aimed at protecting connections of submarine cables for the purpose of carrying electrical energy and placed on the seabed, making these connections very strong and elastic, and therefore suitable for bearing the great mechanical stress and tensions that must be born underwater. Additionally, the invention comprises a method by which the reinforcement arrangement is applied to the connections of two submarine cables.

A heat-recoverable article according to the present invention has a cylindrical shape and includes a base material layer, in which the base material layer contains an antioxidant and two or more polyolefin resins, the base material layer has one melting-point peak temperature, the melting-point peak temperature is 112° C. to 128° C., the heat of fusion of all of the resin components of the base material layer is 80 to 130 J/g, and the oxidation induction temperature of the base material layer is 265° C. to 280° C.

The joint comprises electrical and mechanical connection means (2) connecting both end portions of the cables, a first electrical insulating sleeve (3) mounted on the connection means and the stripped end portions, a second sealing sleeve (4) surrounding the first sleeve (3) and extending on both sides of the first sleeve (3) on said cables (1), and a supplemental and impact-resistant protection element (5) surrounding at least both end portions of the second sleeve (4). The supplemental, impact-resistant protection element (5) comprises at least two layers (11,12): a hard external layer (11) to avoid initial cutting of the object causing the impact, and another layer (12) that is shock-absorbing at the inner side of the first layer (11). The impact-resistant protection element (5) preferably extends over the complete joint so as to surround both ends of the second sleeve (4). A same protection element may extend over the complete joint and thus surround both ends of the second sleeve together, or separate protection elements may each surround one end of the second sleeve. The impact-resistant protection element (5) may also be a sleeve slipped-on over an end of the second sleeve (4), may be wrapped around this end, may consist of two shells surrounding together this end or may be cold shrinkable and applied by cold shrinking. In another embodiment, the supplemental, impact-resistant protection element (5) is made of hard, tear-resistive material. It can be moulded in a shape permitting slipping over one end of the outer sleeve (4) for the impact protection of the weak zone of the joint. The invention also relates to the impact-resistant protection element from one of the above embodiments.

The invention concerns a method and device for sliding and positioning sleeve-shaped elastic radially expandable components (8), made of a highly elastic material, without exerting great force, on cylindrical or conical base bodies (10) having an outer diameter which is greater than the inner diameter of these sleeve-shaped components (8), such as e.g. parts of a cable fitting set mounted and positioned on a cable end prepared in a manner known per se for a cable terminal or cable connection. Immediately before the component is placed onto the base body (10), a plurality of elongated, thin, flexible rib-like sliding tongues (2) in spaced-apart circumferential disposition is inserted in the cavity of the component (8) which has an approximately circular cross section. The sliding tongues (2) are inserted at slight lateral spacing from one another. On these sliding tongues (2) the expanding component (8) is pushed slidingly onto the base body (10) with only slight exertion of force. The sliding tongues (2) are then withdrawn. A sliding sleeve is used to fit the component onto the base body, and includes a transverse band (1) which forms a spacer or partial ring collar and connects a plurality of laterally mutually spaced, elongated, thin, flexible rib-like sliding tongues (2) made of a material which displays high sliding capability compared to the material of the base body (10).

The elastomeric tubing (10) has a forward end opposite a rearward end and an axial bore extending therethrough configured to receive the support core (30). The adapter (40) has a step portion (41) defined by a radial outer surface (42) and a flat surface (43) radially outwardly extending from the radial outer surface (42), and an axial bore (44) extending therethrough. The axial bore (44) has a diameter substantially the same as the diameter of the axial bore (12) of the elastomeric tubing (10).
