A timing synchronization device of a pulsed laser is composed of a first laser gain medium having a first gain region, a second laser gain medium having a second gain region that is not included in the first gain region, and first and second resonators provided with the first and second laser gain media, respectively, and arranged so that two laser pulses occurring in the first and second resonators, respectively, overlap with each other in one of the first and second laser gain media. The second laser gain medium has an oscillation wavelength at which the first laser gain medium crystal cannot cause oscillation.

A composition for a glass-ceramic material that contains a crystallinity of at least about 30% by weight of forsterite components at a liquidus temperature of about 1525null C. or below. The glass-ceramic has a composition, in weight percent on an oxide basis, consisting essentially of about: 40-60% SiO2; 10-25% Al2O3; 18-30% MgO; 3-10% Na2O; 0-10% K2O; >5-15% TiO2. The invention further comprises a method for achieving high crystalline yield at such a low liquidus with increased solubility of high levels of chromium ions. The glass-ceramics can be used in drawing optical fibers and as gain media in amplifier and laser devices for near infrared wavelengths.

The present invention discloses a light emitting module and a method for generating ultrabroadband near-infrared light and increasing the bandwidth and output power. The light emitting module includes a linearly polarized laser pump for generating a visible laser, a half-wave plate for adjusting the to polarization orientation of the visible laser, and a crystal optical fiber disposed on the output light path of the half-wave plate. The core of the crystal optical fiber is made of forsterite (Mg2SiO4) doped with Cr3+ and Cr4+ ions. The doping process comprises: depositing a chromium oxide layer on the lateral surface of the core and driving the chromium atoms into the core by high temperature diffusion; coupling the visible laser into the core to produce a spontaneous emission with wavelengths from 750 to 1350 nm continuously. Particularly, the continuous spectrum is adjustable by changing the polarization orientation of the visible laser via the half-wave plate.

A laser includes a narrow bandwidth AR coating for defining a frequency range for laser emission within the laser cavity. Advantageously, the narrow-band AR coating has a very low loss, which can be particularly useful if the gain medium has low gain. The narrow-band AR coating can be used to narrow the laser emission from a broadband gain medium (e.g. Cr:LiSAF), or to select from among discrete transition lines (e.g. Nd:YAG) without the use of cumbersome tuning elements. An etalon, which may be substantially uncoated, may be utilized to further narrow the fundamental wavelength. For a solid state gain medium, the AR coating may be formed on one of the optical faces. A nonlinear element may be included for frequency-conversion, and the AR coating constrains the lasing frequency in the presence of this nonlinear loss and assists in maintaining single frequency operation to provide a stable frequency-converted output.

A laser system in which the laser medium is a single crystal of Cr.sub.3+ :Mg.sub.2 SiO.sub.4 is disclosed. In one embodiment, the system comprises a single crystal of chromium doped forsterite and a cavity which includes a pair of 30 cm. radius mirror having high transmission at 543 nm (the pump wavelength) and high reflectivity in the 1150-1350 nm range. Room temperature vibronic pulsed laser action is obtained with this cavity. Laser action has been observed at 1235 nm and a bandwidth of 25 nm. The wavelength range is suitable for transmission through optical fibers and is useful in laser ranging and remote sensing. Because of the ultrawide fluorescence bandwidth and a 15 fluoroescence lifetime the system is suitable for high intensity, tunable, cw, Q switched mode locked operation. In the mode locked operation pulses as short as 10-500 femtosecond may be generated. A number of different embodiments of the invention are described.

Composite lasers made of contiguous layers of pure and doped polycrystalline ceramics are introduced. The close thermal contact between such layers of the same ceramic allows an efficient and low cost way to take full advantage of the higher allowed dopant concentrations and, therefore, of the higher maximum output laser power afforded by polycrystalline ceramic lasers. Many novel, unique examples are provided, which demonstrate the versatility and commercial merit of polycrystalline ceramic composite lasers.
