    摘要: An impact absorbing system for a flat switch panel has an impact spacer. The impact spacer, a rigid layer that is fixed to an energy-absorbing layer, attaches to the top surface of a flat switch panel just under the overlay. During a condition of switch abuse, the impact absorbing system disperses the energy from a high impact actuation force over a large area of the rigid layer, which in turn causes a large volume of energy-absorbing layer material to be deformed, directing the otherwise damaging impact away from a raised part of the switch that normally accepts a user provided actuation force. Preferably there is an embossed area in the rigid layer and a pip on the raised part of the switch, both improving the function and tactile feedback of the switch. The most preferred embodiment includes a polycarbonate backer on the bottom of the flat switch panel to additionally protect switch components from being damaged by a high impact actuation force.

    摘要: An improved keyboard, and a data terminal incorporating same, is disclosed. The present keyboard advantageously includes a keyboard membrane having, on an upper side, a plurality of raised regions upon which character designators can be placed. A plurality of upper key members are disposed on a lower side of the keyboard membrane. Each upper key member is advantageously structurally adapted to return itself, after removal of an actuating force, to an unactuated position. The raised regions on the upper side, and the upper key members on the lower side of the keyboard membrane are advantageously molded from a single elastomeric layer, thereby replacing hundreds of parts in conventional computer-style keyboards using sliding-plunger type key mechanisms. A plurality of lower key members are disposed on a circuit board underneath the keyboard membrane. The lower key members are structurally adapted to prevent “rock over” when a user depresses a raised region somewhat off-center. In some embodiments, the present keyboard advantageously includes a wire braid disposed on the keyboard membrane that functions as a flexible armor to protect underlying keyboard elements. The protective braid is physically adapted to engage features near an edge of the keyboard membrane so that the wire braid can be secured to the keyboard. In addition to possessing features suitable for engaging the protective braid, the keyboard membrane advantageously includes a seal for engaging a keyboard housing. When so engaged, the seal provides a substantially liquid-resistant keyboard.

    摘要: A vandal resistant, remotely programmable voice communications unit is capable of being programmed for automatically calling predetermined telephone numbers. The unit is programmed remotely from any touch-tone telephone. A vandal-resistant push-button actuator employs first and second axially spaced apart, slidable seals on a push-button mounted within a housing. The seals absorb transverse blows to a raised portion of the push-button and a lubricant is disposed between the seals to prevent an adhesive inserted by a vandal from disabling the actuator. A speaker and microphone baffle utilizes offset passageways to inhibit the introduction of a pointed object therethrough to prevent damage to the speaker or microphone. A raised push-button actuator is disposed inwardly of an escutcheon and shaped to form a concave, ring-shaped surface therewith, thus to inhibit damage to the inner surface of the escutcheon from a hammer blow. A vandal-resistant pole mounting device clamps about the pole and is fastened by means of a fastener enclosed within a vandal-resistant housing, thus to prevent tampering with the fastener by a vandal in order to prevent removal of the housing and the mounting device from the pole.

    摘要: An environmentally sealed key switch assembly has a key pad formed from a plurality of individual keys preferably arranged in rows and columns. A first elastomeric sheet has a plurality of holes corresponding to positions of keys in the key pad. Each hole stretches around a corresponding one of the keys in order to provide an environmental seal. A second and unbroken elastomeric sheet stretches under the keys to provide a second environmental seal. The keys press downwardly upon, stretch, and deform the second elastomer sheet and thereby operate an electrical contact. When the key is released the memory of the elastomeric sheets provide a return force to restore the key to normal.

    摘要: A vandal-resistant telephone communications station having a one-piece face plate enclosure with a speaker phone aperture and a plurality of additional apertures therein. A plurality of call push-buttons and an answer push-button are respectively carried in the additional apertures. These buttons are of unique construction and are provided with resilient seals to prevent the insertion of foreign matter around the button, and each button is spring biased to its inoperative position. The call push-buttons control automatic signalling units within the face plate enclosure, and these units automatically generate an output signal at the location being called only during the time the push-button is held in its operative position. The answer push-button operates in similar fashion and is used to respond to an incoming call.
