Abstract: An expansion gap radiation shield is formed from a flexible container housing a radiation shielding fluid, that is located within a variable gap in permanent shielding. The invention reduces radiation dose rates outside the gap when the radiation sources are located on the opposite side of the gap. The device accommodates varying gap sizes with no loss of shielding capability.

Abstract: A radiation protection device is disclosed in the embodiment of the present invention. The radiation protection device is used for a system which is configured to perform safety inspection of a cargo or a vehicle by a ray. The radiation protection device comprising: at least one container, and a radiation protection part disposed within the container. The radiation protection material may comprise at least one of concrete, sandstone, and water, or the radiation protection part may comprise a steel-lead protection wall or a concrete protection wall. With the radiation protection device according to the embodiment of the present invention, after the container is transported to the site, it can be directly put in place to be capable of shielding rays without needing operation or with only simple operation. The amount of on-site work, construction time, and construction cost are low.

Abstract: Described are methods of filling and emptying radiation shields comprising a container formed of thin flexible material. The method of filling comprises the steps of (a) filling the radiation shield with a gas to form the shield and then (b) replacing the gas with a radiation attenuating liquid.Additionally, when the shield configuration is not entirely filled with radiation attenuating liquid, either deliberately or due to leakage, an overpressure of gas above the radiation attenuating liquid solidifies the shield in its designed dimensional configuration. The method of emptying comprises the step of forcing the radiation attenuating liquid out through one or more outlets by forcing a gas into the radiation shield.

Abstract: A shield for use with nuclear reactor systems to attenuate radiation resulting from reactor operation. The shield comprises a container preferably of a thin, flexible or elastic material, which may be in the form of a bag, a mattress, a toroidal segment or toroid or the like filled with radiation attenuating liquid. Means are provided in the container for filling and draining the container in place. Due to its flexibility, the shield readily conforms to irregularities in surfaces with which it may be in contact in a shielding position.
