    摘要: A target irradiation system for irradiating a radioisotope target in a vessel penetration of a fission reactor, including a target delivery assembly including a body defining a central bore, a basket that is slidably receivable within the central bore of the body, and a winch that is connected to the basket by a cable, the target delivery assembly being affixed to the vessel penetration of the reactor, and a target passage that is in fluid communication with the target delivery assembly, wherein the basket is configured to receive the radioisotope target therein via the target passage and be lowered into the vessel penetration of the reactor when irradiating the radioisotope target, and the target delivery system forms a portion of the pressure boundary of the reactor when in fluid communication with the reactor.

    摘要: A radial heat pipe is fitted with a wick and working fluid for the temperature of interest and operated in such a manner as to act as a thermal switch. The heat pipe surrounds nuclear fuel elements and during normal temperature operation transports negligible energy but upon a surge in fuel element temperature large amounts of heat can be transported to limit the fuel element temperature.

    摘要: A pneumatic-tube installation for positioning a sample in the flux of a nuclear reactor is provided with a metallic tube extending from a stop for the sample. An electroacoustical transducer, preferably a microphone, is deposited along the tube at a location outside the reactor core to detect the sound wave transmitted along the tube upon engagement of the sample with the top. The output of the transducer is applied through a variable threshold (amplitude comparator) trigger circuit (Schmitt trigger) to a switching device whose output, in turn, can initiate a timing cycle. An optical detector ahead of the microphone is connected through an AND-gate designed to enable the switching device so that the system responds only at the sound of impact with the stop.
