The present application discloses braking devices for use in a pneumatic tube system (PTS). The braking devices are adapted for in-line incorporation with a pneumatic tube and are operative to stop a pneumatic carrier within a pneumatic carrier system. The in-line braking devices allow for decelerating a carrier to a stop over a distance to reduce the forces applied to a carrier and its contents.

Provided herein are systems and methods for use in controlling a translocation process of a pneumatic tube system in order to reduce the amount of energy transferred from the tube system to a pneumatic carrier and, hence, its contents. Generally, these utilities entail identifying and/or reducing forces applied to a pneumatic carrier traveling through a travel path within a pneumatic tube system. The systems and method disposed herein allow for varying the velocity of a pneumatic carrier as it passes through a travel path of the pneumatic system. Such varying of the velocity allows for reducing the total forces applied to the pneumatic carrier during passage through the system. In one arrangement, the power output of a power source connected to a compressor device is altered to vary the velocity of pneumatic carries in the system.

A system and method provides for a pneumatic tube carrier tracking system having a system control module that captures and presents tracking information associated with sending and receiving carriers. The pneumatic tube carrier tracking system comprises sending and receiving stations connected by pneumatic tubing, and which are configured to securely send carriers, with receiving users optionally being restricted from unauthorized access of carriers. The sending and receiving stations have identifying tag readers configured to scan identifier tags to read carrier delivery, carrier receipt and receiving user information. Destination and intended recipient information are entered at the sending station when sending a carrier and are transmitted to a system control module, which routably delivers and secures the carriers in response the destination and intended recipient information.

A system and method provides for the recovery of carriers stranded within a pneumatic carrier system. Initially, unresolved transaction records generated during the transit of carrier within the system are identified for carrier recovery purposes. System handling information is identified from the transaction record. Based on this information, the system determines a putative location of each a carrier associated with a transaction record. The system operates a segment of the pneumatic system including the putative carrier location to confirm the presence or absence of a stranded carrier. If a carrier is identified within that segment of the system, the carrier is deemed recovered. The carrier is then delivered to the destination location in the transaction record.

The present invention relates to apparatus for transferring security documents. The apparatus is formed from a carrier adapted for use in an air tube system capable of transporting the carrier from a source to a destination. The carrier includes a substantially cylindrically shaped housing (10) which cooperates with the tube to allow the carrier to be transported. The housing includes an internal cavity (10A), and is coupled to a lid (17) and a base (18) to enclose the cavity. The lid includes an aperture (17A) to allow documents to be inserted into the cavity, with the base being removable via a lock to allow the security documents to be removed. The invention also claims an air tube system for transferring security documents, the system including a controller adapted to control a number of control stations (21A, 21B, . . . 21G) for selectively transferring carriers along interconnecting tubes between loading stations and destination stations.

A pneumatic transfer system having a modular pneumatic shifting device. A teller conduit has a teller station and a customer conduit has a customer station. A housing having apertures connected to the teller conduit and the customer conduit has a teller gate and a customer gate intermittently obstructing the apertures. A differential pressure generating mechanism is connected to the housing. A plurality of sensors send signals to a programmable means when a carrier pass through the system actuating movement of the gates and operation of the differential pressure generating mechanism.

A system for transferring pneumatic carriers from one pneumatic carrier receiving/dispatching station to another includes a first pneumatic carrier diverter, or a plurality of such first diverters, each with an inlet/outlet linked through pneumatically-sealed tubes to at least one such station, a multiplicity of outlets, and a device for shiftably linking the inlet/outlet of the diverter to any one of its multiple outlets; a second pneumatic carrier diverter, or a plurality of such second diverters, each with a multiplicity of inlets and a single outlet, and a mechanism for shiftably linking the multiplicity of inlets to the outlets; the system including either a plurality of such first diverters, or a plurality of such second diverters, or both; pneumatically-sealed tubes joining, in parallel, all the diverters of the first kind of all the diverters of the second kind; and a pressure/vacuum supply device joined to the outlet of one or more of the second kind.

A pneumatic-tube installation for positioning a sample in the flux of a nuclear reactor is provided with a metallic tube extending from a stop for the sample. An electroacoustical transducer, preferably a microphone, is deposited along the tube at a location outside the reactor core to detect the sound wave transmitted along the tube upon engagement of the sample with the top. The output of the transducer is applied through a variable threshold (amplitude comparator) trigger circuit (Schmitt trigger) to a switching device whose output, in turn, can initiate a timing cycle. An optical detector ahead of the microphone is connected through an AND-gate designed to enable the switching device so that the system responds only at the sound of impact with the stop.
