A fusion power generating device is disclosed having a relatively small and inexpensive core region which may be contained within an energy absorbing blanket region. The fusion power core region contains apparatus of the toroidal type for confining a high density plasma. The fusion power core is removable from the blanket region and may be disposed and/or recycled for subsequent use within the same blanket region. Thermonuclear ignition of the plasma is obtained by feeding neutral fusible gas into the plasma in a controlled manner such that charged particle heating produced by the fusion reaction is utilized to boot-strap the device to a region of high temperatures and high densitities wherein charged particle heating is sufficient to overcome radiation and thermal conductivity losses. The high density plasma produces a large radiation and particle flux on the first wall of the plasma core region thereby necessitating replacement of the core from the blanket region from time to time. A series of potentially disposable and replaceable central core regions are disclosed for a large-scale economical electrical power generating plant.

A controlled fusion process is provided that can produce a sustained series of fusion reactions: a process that (i) uses a substantially higher reactant density of the deuterium and tritium gases by converging cationic reactants into the higher reaction density at a target cathode rather than relying on random collisions, the converging producing a substantially higher rate of fusion and energy production; (ii) uses a substantially lower input of energy to initiate the fusion; (iii) can be cycled at a substantially higher cycle frequency; (iv) has a practical heat exchange method; (v) is substantially less costly to manufacture, operate, and maintain; and, (vi) has a substantially improved reaction efficiency as a result of not mixing reactants with products.

A double-wall structure consisting of an inner wall, an outer wall surrounding said inner wall and reinforcing ribs that connect said outer and inner walls is produced by a piercing welding method in which an electron beam is externally applied at right angles to the outer wall, such that the welded structure of the outer wall and each rib is composed of at least two piercing weld beads that are spaced apart by an unwelded area, with the sum of the widths of the weld beads being at least 25% of the rib width and the length of the unwelded area exterior to the root of each bead being no more than 20% of plate thickness. The distortion in welding is sufficiently reduced to enable precise assembling of the double-wall structure that can be fabricated efficiently and which can reasonably withstand the large electromagnetic force caused by plasma disruption.

A remote control apparatus for maintaining a tokamak type nuclear fusion reactor comprises a rail having a plurality of arcuated links to be extended in a circumferential direction and a plurality of joints for pivotally connecting the adjacent arcuated links, a vehicle running on the rail extended so as to form a continuous arc with its center substantially coinciding with the center of the torus space, and at least one handling device mounted on the vehicle, for handling the in-vessel components. The remote control apparatus is further provided with a rail housing device for receiving the arcuated links in a folded state when they are not in use, a rail mounting device for sending out said arcuated links in succession into the torus space, extending them so that they form a continuous arc and supporting the arcuated link on the proximal end of the rail, and a rail supporting device for supporting the central portion of the rail extended in the torus space.

U-shaped limiter tiles placed end-to-end over a pair of parallel runners secured to a wall have two rods which engage L-shaped slots in the runners. The short receiving legs of the L-shaped slots are perpendicular to the wall and open away from the wall, while long retaining legs are parallel to and adjacent the wall. A sliding bar between the runners has grooves with clips to retain the rods pressed into receiving legs of the L-shaped slots in the runners. Sliding the bar in the direction of retaining legs of the L-shaped slots latches the tiles in place over the runners. Resilient contact strips between the parallel arms of the U-shaped tiles and the wall assure thermal and electrical contact with the wall.

An apparatus and method are disclosed for machine-replaceable plasma-facing tiles for fusion power reactor environments. The apparatus and method involve a tile that is fish scale shaped, and a tile support tube that is attached to the back portion of the tile. The tile support tube includes at least one coolant channel and at least one guard vacuum channel. In one or more embodiments, the method for removing the tile comprises providing a tile that is installed in a manifold channel of a first wall of a fusion power reactor, rotating the tile such that it is in an install/removal orientation, inserting two tines of a removal tool between the outer edges of the tile and the first wall of the fusion power reactor, rotating the removal tool such that the two tines grasp the tile support tube, and lifting the tile away from the wall with the removal tool.

The spring permits the pipe joint to remain intact despite mechanical disturbances of the pipes. A backup ring partially encloses the sealing ring to control thermal strain of the sealing ring. A closure system employs a plurality of pivoting arms and a movable roller assembly to clamp together the end fittings to seal the joint.
