A peripheral processor for a central processing unit is in the form of a memory which is repetitively loaded with data scanning an array. The processor performs predefined logical operations between respective elements of successive scans of data. Preferably address signals sent to the peripheral processor via a preassigned set of address lines specify a desired one of a plurality of predetermined logical operations. Logical operations may also be performed when data is written to processor memory as well as read from the processor. A memory shift register, for example, automatically transfers original data from present scan memory to past scan memory when new data is loaded into present scan memory. In the field of machine control, the processor permits single-bit storage and retrieval with respect to a byte oriented memory and also detects individual bit transitions, thereby facilitating manipulation of single bit input/output data and the conditioning of machine control operations based on the occurrence of bit transitions.

A processor arrangement is described having a programmer logic controller (PLC) operating to a ladder diagram process. A number of event inputs (11-15) are provided connected to an interrupt buffer (31), in turn connected to a real time clock (32), for recording times of events of signals received on the event inputs and generating interrupts. Sequential storage locations in a cyclical buffer (60) store interrupts and their event times, where events occurring within a predetermined incremental time window are stored, with their event times, in a storage location for that time window. Each location of the cyclical buffer is inspected in sequence upon each new step of the sequential process. The PLC is arranged to operate on any events stored in the buffer which are affected by the new step of the sequential process before proceeding to the next step of the sequential process.

A signal tracing control system provided in a programmable machine controller (PMC) which controls a machine in response to a signal from a numerical control apparatus. A signal of a monitored RAM (1) is monitored for a change by a monitoring circuit (21). When a signal change is detected by the signal monitoring circuit (21), it applies a signal to a writing control circuit (22) which then writes the data of the monitored RAM (1) into a tracing buffer (2). This cycle of operation is repeated. Thus, only when a data item in the monitored RAM (1) is changed, is the signal traced. Effective signal tracing can therefore be effected with a small memory capacity.

A device for carrying out the method and a method to produce the control software are described.
