A film drive control system includes a light source that directs a beam at a photographic filmstrip and a sensor located such that it detects this light source depending on whether or not the light source is blocked by the passage of the photographic filmstrip. The filmstrip includes perforations that indicate frame exposure areas. The filmstrip is advanced one frame at a time by first moving the film forward at a relatively high velocity until the leading edge of the perforation passes the sensor, then reducing the velocity in the forward direction until the trailing edge of the perforation passes the sensor. The filmstrip is then moved in the film reverse direction at a reduced velocity until the trailing edge again passes by the sensor, at which time the filmstrip is halted.

A film transporting device for use in a camera disclosed is so designed as to rewind the film such that no film portion is engaged in film take-up sprocket, resulting in an easy take out of the used film. The device in one form includes a counter that counts up the number of frames during a wind-up operation is carried out after the positioning of a film leader in contact with the take-up sprocket, and during a rewind operation, the counter counts down the same number of frames, or more, to locate the film leader in a disengaged position from the sprocket. The device in another form includes a film perforation detector. In this form, the film rewind operation is carried out until the perforation detector stops detecting the perforation. In a further form, the device includes a mechanical counter which counts up the frames used during wind-up operation, and during rewind operation counts down more than the number counted up to ensure that the film leader portion is withdrawn from the take-up sprocket.

The locking lever (11) is provided with an eccentric pin (10) whose position can be adjusted by rotation. The eccentric pin (10) is engaged with an arm (15b) of the detection lever adapted to detect a film stop position by inserting the protrusion (15a) into a film perforation. The film stop position is adjusted by changing the timing at which the step (11a) is disengaged from the bent portion (7a).

A preferably pocket-sized camera having an overall shape which is thin in its vertical dimension has its horizontal longitudinal dimension shortened by constructing the camera in two relatively horizontally telescoping sections. One of the camera sections is a main camera section including substantially all of the components of a still camera except for the viewfinder portion thereof. The other section of the camera has a housing which interfits with the housing of the main camera sections so in its retracted position the front and rear viewfinding lens elements thereof interleave with elements of the main camera housing. When the viewfinder section is in its extended position, the front and rear viewfinder lens elements are unobstructed. In the retracted position of the viewfinder section, a part thereof covers the objective lens and shutter release member in the main section of the camera, and wall elements of the main camera section cover over the viewfinder lens elements. The movable viewfinder carrying section is provided with means for cocking the shutter operating mechanism of the camera and removing a film perforation sensing finger as it is moved to its retracted position and means for effecting a film advancing operation when the viewfinder section is moved to its extended position.
